Photoshop CS3 crashing when opening or saving files

I wonder if anybody here know why this problem won't disappear even after reinstalling my Photoshop CS3? Whenever I try to open a file (any image format) or save by using Cmd+O, Cmd+S or the File menu in Photoshop, Photoshop is crashing. Brutal crash, goes down. This means I can't save anything I create. Exporting via "export to web" is working, but I can't save (or save as) PS documents.

I have deleted all prefs files etc, and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but that did nothing.

Hello,

I am not understanding the situation. Have you received photo files in Mail? Do these photo images render to View in Place, and thus be seen in the message window? Is it only when you Save the images and later try to open with Photoshop CS3 that it crashes, or is it when you must control-click on a file that has not rendered to View in Place to then Open With PS CS3 that this takes place?

Also what is the exact file type of these images -- .jpg, .psd, something else?

Hi. To read about application crashes, you can look at http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/crashes-freezes/application-unexpectedly -quit.php and follow the suggestions in http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/crashes-freezes/application-troubleshoot ing.php. In particular, I would check for updates to your Photoshop application. The disk installed version of Photoshop CS3 had various problems with Leopard. As I remember, one of the problems was crashing when using the Open and Save dialog boxes. If for some reason you can't update to the latest version of CS3, or you're already at the latest version, you could try going into the Photoshop preferences and seeing if there is a toggle for Adobe dialog boxes vs Apple dialog boxes. I recall CS3 having such a setting but I can't find it in CS4 right now. I also recall having a similar problem with CS3 and Leopard until I ticked that checkbox one way or the other. Good luck!

I was finally able to solve this problem by doing this: A complete reformat of my Mac's internal, main drive, reinstalling MacOS10.5 (then upgrading to 10.6), then installing all my software again, including the original Adobe CS3 digital download. Now Photoshop is working like it should again, but I can't click ok when Adobe suggests software updates - these updates will create the same error again... (For all I know, this is not a bug but a feature, a feature to force users to do the expensive and unnessesary upgrade to CS4...?)
