3GS upgrade to 3.0.1 Error 3014 - Problem Solved

A lot of folks have had problems upgrading their 3GS to 3.0.1 resulting in a time-out during verification and leaving the phone in recovery mode and not being able to snap it out of it, as you keep getting error 3014.

Fingers have been pointed at firewalls and ISP and routers, but no concrete solution has been established. Whatever the reason for it, there is a solution 🙂 and it worked for me, I reckon it'll work for anyone out there that got hit with this.

Walkthrough:

essentially you'll need to download a safe internet connection tool that we should all be running to protect ourselves when we are on public wifi or in hotels etc, There is nothing dodgy about this, its completely legit and it works so easily on PC and MAC, go to:

http://hotspotshield.com/

download the program, it takes about 10 seconds!

follow the onscreen instructions, for MACs its drop the applications into your application folder!

close all your windows, find the program in applications and run it, it launches a browser window showing it's progress as it establishes a secure connection, an icon appears in the top RHS of the tool bar, when it goes GREEN your ready to go.

Just connect the iPhone as normal, and follow iTunes prompts and it'll breeze past the waiting for verification part and that's it jobs almost done, it'll install and about 5 minutes later it'll reboot in 3.0.1 mode YEAH!

As to the whys, of why this works, don't ask me - I don't care, I don't want to go messing around with firewalls and ports and proxy servers and packet allowances or whatever else people have manipulated in order to get a result, this works end of story, and as I mentioned you should have this on when you suspect your not on a secure network anyway!!!!

Good luck folks and many thanks

I had this problem this morning right before I had to leave to work so my iPhone is sitting in my car waiting for me to get home back to iTunes.

As soon as 3.0.1 Failed, it stayed on the blank screen with the apple on it forever! Then in a panic rush I pressed the Home button and the Power on/off button and after it reboots it tells me to connect to iTunes.

I will try this as soon as I get home,... but am I going to be surprised when all of my APPS and CONTACTS are deleted or something? Or will everything be A-OK? when I try this hotspot thingy you talk about?

Hmm this one didn't work for me. :o(

I had the same issue with upgrading to 3.0 A trip to the Apple shop sorted it. took 10mins after they plugged it into a Mac (rather than my Windows Laptop).

I have another appointment at the shop, so hopefully that will sort it. I think I will book an appointment before I attempt any future upgrades!

The actual upgrade did take a little while once it going, there was a progress bar under the apple logo. Hopefully when you plug it in you can just restore it to the previous backup and start again when you have the time to let it complete.

Many thanks to everyone else for the thanks, I'm delighted it has worked for you, I don't expect we'll ever find out the real reason why some folks could do this okay and others couldn't, the fact that all evidence points to third party peripherals like routers or to third parties like ISPs means we'll never know for sure.

I'll make one wager though, that when upgrade 3.1 comes out, we won't get error 3014..... you'll notice I didn't say it wouldn't be an error free update 🙂

Thanks for that. I've had Hotspot Shield for a while but I never bothered to try and check it out. I was too anxious to even try to update it again. I guess my only concern now is what is going to happen when the next update rolls around. Will we be expected to do the same thing? Hopefully Apple looks at this issue

It worked! Thank goodness...but geez what a panic for 24 hours with my brand new 3Gs. Now, I'll be afraid to let the next update try to load. One additional thing I did was to make sure I was connected hardwire instead of using a wireless connection. I'm not sure if it made any difference but now I'm up and running so life is good again. Thanks dawnrazor for the tip.

It worked. I had my 3GS for a month and last night after downloading that upgrade (3.0.1), I found my phone dead with only one instruction to ask me to connect to iTune. When I did, it failed with the message of error 3014. After installed that hotspotshield thing, my phone finally start working in iTune and now it is fine after restoration. Thank you for the help and now I have my phone back. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

You're right. But there is one player in the game who exactly knows, what happend: Apple!
And I really do hope that their programmers read our complaints about non-working updates carefully. Something in the way the updating process communicate with Apple's servers was changed in 3.0.1. They cannot blame our routers and firewalls for that.

Argh! I am getting sick of this update.
I don't get error 3014 but I get a mix of 1603 and 1604 errors.
At first I get downgraded back to OS 3.0 which got my phone at lease working again.

I have tried updating to OS 3.0.1 countless times now using every fix I can find online but none of them work.

Looks like I am going to have to stick to OS 3.0 which will leave me open to the sms vunerability.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

iTunes is up to date, I have tried restarting the apple service, updating with and without the sim, using the fix posted here with HSS but none of it works...
