Songs won't transfer to my new iPod Classic

I have an iMac running OSX 10.5.7. I just purchased a new iPod Classic (120gb). When I sync the new iPod it does not transfer to the iPod all the songs in the designated file. I've tried manually dragging the songs and this does not work. I tried copying the entire library to the iPod (rather than just my file), and this does not work. Nearly all of the songs that will not transfer came from discs I own and uploaded to iTunes so I know it's not a licensing issue. Anyone experience this problem? Any ideas how to fix?

Hello Ravenswood,

How do you have your iPod set up to sync music? Manually or Automatically? I would check out this Apple support document describing how to sync music to your iPod either manually or automatically.
[Syncing Music to iPod|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1351]

When you are syncing files to your iPod are there any error messages that appear such as iTunes cannot copy the file because it could not be found? Can you play the music Ok in iTunes?

Make sure that if you have your iPod set to automatically sync all checked songs and videos that each song in your library has a check mark next to it.

Let me know. Would love to help. 😉

I've tried doing the sync both ways, and it does not work either way. The songs all play fine on iTunes (and played fine on my old iPod (40gb Classic) that this new one replaced). And I have also made sure that all the songs that would not transfer had a check. I have also ensured that I have the latest version of iTunes and all current Mac OSX updates. Finally, I have tried resetting the iPod to factory settings, erasing everything, and re-doing. Nothing works. Really odd.

I can try to sync it later today on my wife's MacBook, and we can see what happens. As for the progress bars, it initially ran through the songs (rapidly) along with the synching indicator at the top of iTunes. It ended normally - i.e., indicating that the iPod had completed syncing -and no error messages appeared. I only discovered the lack of a complete transfer when later using the iPod after the initial sync and discovered some missing music.

So synching up to my wife's MacBook did not resolve the problem. On a whim, I decided to copy the songs that would not transfer into a new playlist. I then modified the settings for the iPod to sync up both from my general music file and that playlist. The songs then transferred. I'm perplexed but it appears to have resolved the problem. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi there: new to forums. Just purchased the new ipod classic 160gb and upgraded to itunes 9.

problem is, some of the music i've had for years in mp3 format do not import into itunes 9.

i keep the majority of my library on an external hard drive and sync to my ipods. on the initial sync to the new ipod classic, i'd say about 10% of my albums did not import.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom as to why these files would be fine on my previous ipods and older versions of itunes and why all of a sudden they bounce when i try to drag and drop them manually?

Any info would be appreciated.
Thank You!

Hey Folks....

Those of you having issues with specific songs syncing to your iPods, when you encoded your MP3's how or where did you do them? Was it done through iTunes or another app?

By a long distance shot, it sounds as if some of those MP3's have something like:

* A DRM encoding on them, so the iPod/iTunes is declining the sync (a very long shot)

* That the MP3's were encoded with a fashion that is not supported. (i.e. - the lame encoder previously used was doing variable bit encoding to save files, however I've seen in older versions of iTunes that they woudl play fine, but when on the ipod you couldn't fast forward.... They could have added items in to reduce iPod problems, and thus not allowing them to sync because they are not passing validation rules... Thus the mp3 to mp3 encoding is correcting it)

I hope this helps, I'd be interested in knowing some more of the statistics for your MP3's which are not transferring over... Would anyone care to share?
