Port 993 problems in Mail

Tried configuring new email address, but receiving "The server error encountered was: The server “*.hostgator.com” cannot be contacted on port 143."

Tried putting in Port 993, still no go.

Tried sending email to particular email address, logged in to webmail, and found email inbox. So it's receiving the emails.

Is this , therefore a faulty setup configuration in Mail?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Greetings,

Is this an IMAP or POP account? If it's IMAP, the outgoing port is 143 and the incoming port is 993, so swapping those numbers won't work no matter what you do. If it's a POP account, the outgoing port is 110 and the incoming port is 995.

You should check to be sure you've entered the right mailserver name for domain that you're hosting at hostgator in the form of mail.yourdomain.com. If that still doesn't work, ask hostgator for assistance, since their systems may be having trouble.

Just to clarify, and correct something the other poster said -- both Port 143 and Port 993 are Incoming ports, used with IMAP accounts. The former is when not using SSL, and the latter is for use of SSL. Neither are Outgoing ports for use with a SMTP.

Have tried switching the form of the Username, or asked Hostgator about that. In Mail you must explicitly enter the proper form, which will either be the username of the email address (portion in front of the @) or the entire email address entered as the Username.

Thank you for your replies.

What is annoying, is that I already have another IMAP email account using exactly same settings, ports etc.

The only difference I can think of, is that the email address is of a sub domain.

This mail server works:
mail.davidwalters.me

This one doesnt:
mail.photography.davidwalters.me

The format Hostgator told me to use is david+mail.davidwalters.me,
therefore, othere one is david+mail.photography.davidwalters.me
Latter doesnt work

Any ideas?

I recently had a problem with receiving and sending mail with my MobileMe account in Mail.app. I was getting a port 993 error. Chatted with 3 different people at MobileMe support. Tried multiple things, far too many to list. Eventually they said the problem was originating in my computer as I was not having problems accessing on other computers and suggested taking to an Apple store. After talking to them I read a post somewhere that suggested throwing away the mail preferences (com.apple.mail.plist) found in username/library/preferences and restarting my computer. This worked! After hours of frustration. I did have to recreate my accounts in Mail Preferences, but I did not lose any of my messages, new or saved. Hope this helps someone.
