How can I change an audio clip from purple back to green?

Green means the audio is free floating in the back ground. Purple means it will start at a specific frame. If you do not want it to start at a specific frame, you can select EDIT/ARRANGE MUSIC TRACKS. Select your Purple track and click "Unpin".

[Then watch this one|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/imovie08.html#tutorial=backgroundaud io] The answer to your specific question is in the second video.
