Show digital camera as device in finder

How can I show my digital camera as a drive under devices in the finder. When I plug in my camera it opens iPhoto but I want to access the files without going through iPhoto. My camera is a Canon PowerShot SD1100. I checked the menus for a manual option but I couldn't find one.

Apple, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Some cameras simply won't mount as a device. My Canon PowerShot for instance just won't do that thing. What I do is download the pix using Image Capture, you can send them anywhere you want, create a new folder, and so on. Your other option is buy a card reader, which will mount as a disk, and has the added advantage of sparing your camera battery. To use Image Capture, launch it, go to Preferences, and select Image Capture as the program to open when a camera connected.

If you're referring to a camera menu option, I wouldn't expect to see one that would affect this.

In the "General" tab of the Finder's preferences, is the "External disks" option checked? When the camera is connected and you open a Finder window, do you see the camera in the "Devices" section of the sidebar?

I would totally expect this on any camera, except a Canon.

On many brands of digital cameras, there is a menu item that lets you choose USB Mass Storage mode. If the camera can be put in this mode, it can show up on the Mac Finder desktop as a volume. Canon cameras are interesting in that they generally do not support USB Mass Storage mode and so there is no way you can mount them directly on the Mac desktop. Nikons and others can do it, though.

This is not a big problem because there are so many other ways to get pics off of a Canon. You can use a card reader. You can use iPhoto or Apple Image Capture in your Utilities folder. You can use the Canon software that you install from the CD that came with the camera. You can use any number of other apps like Aperture, Lightroom, etc. that recognize Canon cameras. You just can't mount them as a disk.

I learn new things every day. My experience with this is with Nikon and Olympus cameras, both of which mount on the Desktop.

Same here with my brand-new Powershot A 480, it refuses to show in Finder.
The Canon-app stinks, I never use iPhoto, but Imagecapture works fine.
My problem, I use my camera also as a carry-along-picture-book, so I want to upload all my old photo's and movies, from my old cam, (saved to a desktop-folder) to the Canon.
With ImageCapture, no luck.
With the Canon-app, only one by one, and not the movies.
Now what?

If you use a card reader instead of plugging the camera in, the card should show up in the Finder and you can drag anything you want onto it because then it will be seen like a flash drive. One of the many practical reasons I don't like camera cables and I do love card readers.

OS 10.5.8 Leopard canon Problem solved! Using OS 10.5.8 Leopard (not snowL) Iphoto didn't recognize my Cannon 620. I went to Canon's site and saw that there is no fix there or on Apple's site. Then I saw a post regarding using the App Image Capture (part of the OS). I opened it and was about ready to use it as work around when I saw that the was loaded in iphoto. Since I opened image capture it imports everytime without that app being open. It's like the puter needed some help in recognizing the Cannon just once. This might work with other Cannon camera's.
