Desktop icons won't open when clicked on

Just recently, my white macbook developed a problem where whenever I click on icons on my desktop, they do not open. The only way for me to open icons on my desktop is by opening my Trash and using the tabs on the sidebar to access them.Is there a way to fix this problem?
