Issues with 3.0.1 update

A lot of people are complaining on various forums that the 3.0.1 update has left them with a phone that is stuck in recovery mode. There is a solution to this problem that allows you to go back to 3.0 without wiping out all your data and restoring (a long, slow process with questionable results). The support at Apple said there is NO WAY to go back to 3.0....not so! Here are the instructions if you should find yourself with an iPhone that failed to update.

This is for windows* users:

1. go download iRecovery from here: http://www.zaksenterprises.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=84&func=fi leinfo&id=32

2. install the LibUSB-Win32 utility.

3. open a command prompt and navigate to the irecovery folder. run irecovery from the command prompt.

4. follow these instructions:
How to Kick iPhone out of Recovery Mode (Win)
1. Run this command: "iRecovery -s"
2. Type: "printenv"
3. Look for this variable in the list: "auto-boot". Most likely, yours will be set to false (hence your problem).
4. If "auto-boot" is set to "false" or isn't present at all, follow the rest of this guide. If it's set to true, try restarting your iPhone/iTouch by holding home and power for 10 seconds.
5. Type this: "setenv auto-boot true".
6. Type: "saveenv".
7. Type: "reboot".

5. That's it. This worked like a charm on my 32GB 3GS. Fully recovered to how it was before I attempted the update. Never again Apple!! Your updates are SH*T!

thanks to http://www.mail-archive.com/wamug@wamug.org.au/msg52977.html for reposting the original instructions that were at http://ipitg.net/ which appears to be down.

*this same procedure works for Macs too, you just need the mac versions of iRecovery and libusb. The commands are all the same though.
