iPod shuffle won't show up in iTunes

My mom's 2nd Generation iPod shuffle will not show up when connected to our Mac, but will still charge. She is unable to put new music on the iPod.

imac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), iPod Touch 1st Generation (Firmware 2.2.1)

I have two iPod shuffle 2nd gen, neither is working on any of my mac's, I have 10.6.1 on two of the
computers along with the latest version of iTunes ver 9 (70) I had the same issue with 10.5.8 and the
last version of iTunes. I've reset both with the "iPod reset utility". It takes forever to mount the shuffle
in iTunes, when it does show and I try to copy anything to the iPod shuffle it fails! It's interesting that
this seems to have happen around the same time that the 3rd generation iPod shuffle came onto the
market, I smell a rip-off, yes Steve are you listening (possibly NOT!) Any how I've very disappointed with
Apple as this is an issue and they seem to don't really care, they just won't you to purchase more
STUFF, well I still have my iPod touch and iPod classic, once they die or Apple decides to mess up
the software then I'll possibly look else where.

I have also developed this problem. I updated to both Snow Leopard and iTunes 9 and things worked well for awhile, but recently I cannot see the Shuffle in either iTunes or the Desktop. When I plug it in I get three orange flashes on the status light then nothing.

I have tried the various steps on the support site, but am stymied at the Restore part. I can't restore via iTunes (obviously) but every time I try to install the iPod Reset Utility I get the following error code:

The destination folder "/Volumes/iPod Reset Utility 1.0.3" is on a locked volume. Please select another destination.

I have no idea what this means or how to work around it. The only locked volume on my system would the disk image on which the iP0d Reset Utility resides and I am not installing there.

Any help out there?

So is this a general problem with Shuffles and OS 10.6 and/or iTunes 9 then?

I haven't been using my Shuffle in a long time, now I've charged it via USB adaptor but even though it's fully charged it's not recognized by my iMac. It doesn't show up in the Disk Utility software. When I connect it, the light on the Shuffle flashes orange once, then nothing.

I've had the same issue with my 2nd Gen shuffle. I can't see it in iTunes, but it's there in the system profiler. I'm running Snow Leopard and iTunes 9.

I tried plugging it into a Windows PC and there it works fine - so for now my shuffle is reformatted running on Windows.

Pretty annoying from a company that controls all their hardware and software...

I am having the same issues with this second hand shuffle! Everything is updated, my ipod classic works just fine, but going through all the tech help ends up to the same thing reset utility that requires the machine to recognize the shuffle!!!You'd think they'd read what they are trying to support and see the error in this fix!! I am still looking for an answer, but it is appearing to be a software problem that can be fixed only with the purchase of a new item!!! Anyone else come up with the same answer?!

i've developed this problem, now, too. three flashes when i dock it and then nothing. this seems to be a problem that comes a goes, and, hopefully, if i just use it today it will be ok to sync when i get home tonight. this is incredibly frustrating considering i haven't updated my OS or itunes in a while.

does anyone have any solutions that have worked for them?
