I just got my 3g not to long ago. However, im having some issues with emails.

I have it set to fetch manually, have push turned off.

I want to be able to download my emails ONLY if i choose. I dont want it to push to my phone. I have tried everything, but no matter what, my emails will continue to download throughout the day. Its random times too.

I have tried a Reset, please dont ask again..working on my 4th already.

Is there some setting im missing? IM sure i got it all...a few different places.

I just dont understand why you dont have a send and receive button for each email account.

If Fetch is set to Manual and Push is off the phone will only download email when the mail app is open. So you are either not closing the mail app, or you are opening it periodically. "Manual" means "fetch email when I open the mail app".

If you don't even want that go to Settings/Mail,contacts & calendar and turn off the mail account.

    thanks for the help...

im not opening the mail program at all...however, i noticed when i opened my SMS window, sometimes if im on Wifi, it will connect and check my mail.

If i go and turn off the account in settings, and i do need to check the mail, will i need to enter all the info again or will it save the settings (SMTP, POP3, User/pass etc etc).

I tried yet ANOTHER reset yesterday to show a friend the issue wasnt do to a config problem. We setup 1 email account (my gmail) and went on my day..by quitting time (3pm or so) my phone downloaded the gmails. The only thing i did with my phone was listen to music for about 45mins. After i saw the mail, i browsed a few sites, sent a few SMS.

No, you can turn it off and on. It will save your settings. I have never seen this problem; I only get mail on my manual accounts when I open Mail; not when I open SMS.

If your phone is jailbroken all bets are off, of course.

    ya i dunno whats up...

it just checked my mail when i opened up my contacts too...

really dont understand how apple could not give us a send/receive button....such a small thing makes such a HUGE difference.

I have a bad feeling im going to have to carry around 2 phones, carrying the iphone for fun and a blackjack2 for emails =(

I don't understand what is happening on your phone. It certainly doesn't happen on mine. I have 2 POP3 accounts, 1 IMAP and one Exchange account. I have Fetch OFF and Push on. I get my Exchange mail in real time whether the mail app is open or not. I do not get any other mail until I open the mail app. I don't get mail when I open Contacts, don't get mail when I text.

The only thing I can think of is that your phone is jailbroken and allows multiple apps to run at the same time, one of them being mail.

BTW, what is so terrible about getting mail? If you are in the US and on AT&T you have unlimited data, so it isn't costing you anything.

    Phone is N O T jailbroken..

I was able to get it to stop checking mail when opening SMS messages, i really dont know how..

However, i still get the mail pushed whenever i open my contacts via the iphones page, not the springboard.

    thanks

The only reason I asked if it was jailbroken is because a jailbroken phone can do what you describe.

I'm not sure what you mean about opening contacts via the iphone page vs the springboard. What are these?

im kinda misunderstanding you here...what am i describing about a jail broken phone?

Kinda asked about the mail, dont see a thing about it otherwise.

Whats with this board though and jail breaking, its like whenever anyone has a bug or something wrong, everyone here blames jail breaking. Lets be honest...the only reason why you asked is cause you know you can blame the Jail break instead of the phone.

There is alittle icon that on the pages, like Settings or App store thats listed as CONTACTS, brown icon..

Its not from going to the bottem line and touching phone, and then going to phone and into contacts from there.

Jailbroken phones can run apps in background, among other things. So mail could run at the same time with other apps. When phones do odd things that most people don't see the first thought is that the phone isn't normal.

I tried to duplicate the issue you posted. I sent an email to a POP3 account, then opened the brown Contacts icon. The phone did not retrieve the email.

I then sent an email to an IMAP account on the phone, and opened Contacts. Again, the phone did not retrieve the email.

Next I sent an email to an Exchange push account I have on the iPhone. This time the badge on the mail app showed 1 message, which is what I would expect. I again opened Contacts and the phone did not retrieve any email.

Finally, I opened the mail app. The POP and IMAP messages were downloaded after I opened mail, not before. The Exchange push message was already there.

So I don't see why your phone is acting differently. All I can suggest at this point is to do a Restore as a new phone, then recreated your email accounts if you are sure push, notifications, and Fetch are all off.

well just checking now, but it hasnt downloaded any emails at all today...first time since ive got it.

I cant explain why or what was causing it though. I have tested a few other of my friends iphones and not one of them did that.

Ill keep testing it a few days and see....thanks for the help so far though.

DO you know of any way to just download 1 email account when you open mail?
  • Lawrence Finch Level 7 Level 7 (32,220 points)
One thing you may be seeing is if you open email, then close it, mail will continue to be downloaded after it is closed. This is the only app that works that way. If you had a lot of backlogged email this could take some time.

Unfortunately, short of turning off accounts in Settings there is no way to selective download email from accounts. Once you open mail they will all download.

bump for some help...this is still going on.

many many many restores has only led to the same outcome.

Anytime you reboot your phone, open up contacts, mail program will open and run and check mail.

This has to be a bug and CANNOT BE A FEATURE
