No auto-connect to WLAN with hidden SSID

I work in Infrastructure Services at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory.

Across IBM, there is a standard setup for wireless LAN access. There’s a public WLAN that provides access only to the internet; and there’s a private WLAN that provides access to both the internet and the corporate intranet. The private WLAN requires authentication via WPA/WPA2 Enterprise using LEAP or a certificate, and has a hidden SSID.

Both WLANs are served by the same access points.

The iPhone and iPod Touch do not automatically reconnect to the private WLAN with the hidden SSID.

Each time the iPhone wakes from sleep, the user must connect manually to the private WLAN. The user must go into Settings and then Wi-Fi, wait for the private WLAN to appear in the list (there’s always a delay) and then tap on it. Also, if one opens Mail or Safari application before connecting manually, the the blue pop-up list of available networks will not include the private WLAN with the hidden SSID.

This is a major inconvenience, because it adds half a minute or more to each operation that requires network access. Checking one’s email—something that should normally take no more than ten seconds—instead takes a minute or more, depending on how quickly one manages to connect.

This bug also results in needless expense, because network operations that should go over the local WLAN often go instead over the mobile phone network.

The inability of the iPhone/iPod Touch to reconnect automatically to networks with hidden SSID has been a problem since the original iPhone came out.

This problem is an obstacle preventing wider adoption of the iPhone within IBM.

i have to add my name to this list as well guys, between my personal collection of phones and ipods and works phones i have a total of

4 x Iphone 3g 's
2 x Iphone 3gs 's
2 x ipod touches (one 1st gen one latest gen)
1 x iphone 2g

none of these will reconnect to a hidden SSID network, i thought it was the routers to begin with but we even have two apple Airport Extremes in work with hidden SSID's and none of our kit will re-connect to that.

all the kit is running OS 3.1.x

c'mon apple please get this sorted as its driving me and people in work with me MAD....

I have the same problem. Two different locations, both with hidden SSIDs and my iPhone 3GS with OS3.1.3 doesn't auto reconnect to either.

The iPhone used to auto reconnect to a single location with a hidden SSID.
However the problem seemed to begin when I configured the second wireless network location with a hidden SSID on my iPhone.

So much for Apple's "It just works" campaign..

Had the same problem with my iPhone 3 GS, FW 3.1.3.
Flawless connection to my home wifi with visible SSID, initial flawless connection to my work wifi with visible SSID. Than with hidden SSID at work allways the need to manually insert my SSID password.

My solution: iPhone Configuration Utility 2.2 for Mac OS X ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL851)
Download: http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL851/en_US/iPhoneConfigurationUtility.dmg

Had to set up a com.work.profile with that utility and store/send it to my iphone and install it.
(You only need to configure the wifi tab, nothing else!)

Now the connection to my hidden SSID at work also works fine.

Hope, that Apple will fix the FW 3.1.3 bug in the next FW.

Good luck!

That worked for me. In fact, I didn't need to do a reboot. After I clicked to reset the network, it did something automatically that looked like a soft reboot, so I just let it alone and it worked OK. I wonder if just telling the iPhone to forget that connection and then reentering it might have worked; but it seems like I already tried that option. Anyway, your suggestion worked. Thank you.
