Internet Sharing and Self-Assigned IP

i have an iMac hooked up to the internet via an ethernet connection. i have it set to share its internet connection wirelessly. i have a macbook pro that typically connects wirelessly via this shared connection.

recently (as in after the latest OS X update), i've been getting a "self-assigned IP" warning from my macbook pro. i thought it must have an issue, but then i checked another macbook pro - same thing. same goes for my iphone.

so... something weird is going on with my imac. the only way i was able to "solve" it was by restarting the imac. but that's obviously not acceptable.

anyone else have this problem?

Good news, kinda! I just installed sl, and everything works charming. It’s really fast! No problems so far, 1 hour usage.

Internet sharing with leopard almost died at the end, speed was horrible. Very difficult to connect, and that was with firewire! I even reinstalled leopard (clean 10.5.6), it worked fine then. So no doubt, 10.5.8 upgrade messes up internet sharing. And like I mention, it’s not just related to wifi, cause I used firewire connection.

I am running Snow Leopard and have this same issue. I don't know if it's because of the 10.5.8 update, as I only occasionally use Internet Sharing, but it definitely is not working now. The Sharing panel acts like it's on, and the Activity Monitor says it's using a whole lot of my CPUs, but no dice. If this is a legacy bug from 10.5.8, any ideas how to fix it once one has upgraded?

I don’t think it’s related to airport drivers. I was connected to my iBook G4 (10.4.11) with internet sharing with wifi, it has worked with no issues, until 10.5.8.

I'm pretty sure something is hosed with the airport drivers as once the sharing dies, I can no longer connect to other wifi APs: the airport becomes unusable. I have to reboot instead.

As other exasperated customers have suggested, I tried installing the 10.5.8 COMBO updater on top of the standard 10.5.8 update that was installed by the weekly Software Update. It worked -- the problem was fixed immediately. Now I just need to see if the fix sticks, since some (not all) have reported the fix to be temporary then reverting to the original problem after a short period of time.

I ran into this problem after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I use internet sharing to get my MacBook Pro and iPhone connected to the internet through my Mac Pro in my dorm. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get it fixed. (Lost a lot of faith in Apple along the way. It's disgusting that they would let something so massive slip through the cracks) I think, however, that I've finally found the real cause of the problem.

It seems, at least for me, that the issue is more with Parallels than with Mac OS. Parallels does some weird stuff with your network settings even when Parallels isn't running. It actually adds virtual adapters in your System Settings>Network tab and then bridges your physical connection to those. Fortunately, I hate Parallels and stick with VMWare. By simply delating the virtual adapters that it created and then uninstalling Parallels to keep them from coming back, my macbook almost immediately acquired an IP address.

Additionally, part of the problem seems to be drastically reduced range on sharing a wired connection over AirPort wifi. Even with the connection working, simply walking to the other side of my tiny dorm room seems to drop the connection.

At any rate, the above fix worked for me. So if you are using Parallels, give it a shot.
