What is a .mkv file...and can i watch it?
A friend of mine is about to give me a film that he says is encoded as a H.264 but it ends with .mkv, will Quicktime play it?
Nope. Not without some codec help.
Ask your friend to convert (they have the codec and you don't) to a more "friendly" QT format.
The "Matroska video format" is not supported by the standard install of QuickTime.
