Temporary fix as per Apple Product specialist OSX 10.5.8 WIFI fix

I just worked for about an hour with an Apple Product specialist and verified the problem and resolved it with the following steps which are a temporary fix until Apple releases a permanent fix:

Verified battery performance much lower WIFI only than on power.

Temporary fix:

1. Open Finder

2. Go to /system/library/extensions

3. Open Time Machine in the above folder on the date prior to the upgrade in my case Aug 4 09

4. Restore:

- appleairport.kext

- I080211family.kext (start is eye oh not one zero)

Tests and all performance fully restored

Macbook Pro 4 gig, Mac OS X (10.5.5), IPOD 2nd generation, Parallels with Windows XP

The AppleAirPort.kext is just fine, so no need to restore it.

The problem is the new firmware stored in IO80211Family.kext...

do I just click restore 'I080211family.kext' file from my Time Machine backup and it replaces my old one? Is there more to this or am I missing something big like clearing caches and stuff? Thanks!

This fix doesn't really work. I'm still experiencing wi-fi unreliability that wasn't there before 10.5.8.

No you just go into Time Machine to a date prior to the upgrade and just hit restore of those two files. It replaces the existing files with those files. Restart your machine and all should be good.

Oh okay. Thanks! I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow since the AppleCare rep said to take it there. Let's see what they do. I called today and the person told me that the Apple Engineers are aware and they will email me in 4-5 days with the status of the fix. If nothing, I will try your way Kerry Dawson. I appreciate your help!

I have done all that. The problem is not with wi-fi speed. Instead, it is the fact that, since upgrading to 10.5.8, I have to re-start airport because internet services stop working after about an hour. This is a huge problem with the OS update and it hasn't been corrected with restoring the kext files.

It has in my case and my roommates but our wireless chip set is the same even though his is a March 09 Macbook Pro and mine is an Oct 08 Macbook Pro. The Apple fellow was able to determine this by the three logs I sent him and then he told me what files to replace.

All is now perfect with both our machines. Your machine might have different hardware and thus be affected differently by this upgrade.

Apple is working on a fix but who knows when it will be released.

Yes, the Mac is not quite as much fun as it used to be. It requires a lot of kicking of the tires lately but that's another story.

Yes, I've even talked to an Apple Product Specialist that is crossing his fingers that Snow Leopard will solve the vexxing sync services issue that plagues OSX with not providing reliable syncs. Boy and does this one require a lot of tire kicking.

I restored the two files in time machine and all seems to be working fine.
