Green grid overlay distortion when viewing photos in Aperture

A curious problem has just arisen in Aperture on my machine, possibly in relation to the OS X 10.5.8 upgrade.

Preview thumbnails, and occasionally full page views are being distorted with a strange matrix of green dots. I am only getting this in Aperture (2.1.3). I have posted an example to http://www.bayswaterfarm.com/pictures/GreenGrid.pdf

Is anyone else seeing this problem, or does anyonehave any idea what is going on?

PowerMac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 30 in Apple Cinema disp (Radeon X800XT) + 17 in Studio display

I rushed to my version of Aperture just to make sure after looking at your PDF with some surprise I may add.

The regularity of that pattern suggests to me the input/output signals are awry and I note your hardware combination includes PowerMac G5, 30" Apple Cinema disp (Radeon X800XT) + 17 in Studio display. Take any one of those, and one might wonder if the update has caused this. I would suggest at least a report to Apple's feedback on this and hope that someone else has a suggestion.

I presume you have tried restarts and the like. As a point, did you update with the Delta version or the Combo? If the former, try the Combo. If the Combo, try it again.

Thanks Graham -

Just to be clear, the downloadable pdf is a screenshot taken within Aperture. The problem only appears in Aperture-displayed images and does not appear to be a feature of the image itself (or any versions): it is not present in exported images. Also, it affects images displayed both the 30in Cinema display (ATI Radeon X800XT) - my 'full-screen' (secondary)- display for Aperture, and an apple 17in Studio Display I use as the 'control/browser' (primary) display for Aperture.

I suspect therefore it is an Apple issue, and have reported it as a bug. I did reinstall both the ProRuntime and the 10.5.8 Combo updates, but it didn't fix it.

That looks to me then as if the Radeon/Aperture combination is the problem and (as you write) an issue with some (display related) part of the recent update. Have you tried other monitors? When you get it fixed, or if there are any changes, can you update the thread?

I will have a look at Aperture in my office later as I have a display there I connect to my MBP, although I am sure that I was using this on Friday with no such extra attributes. The MBP uses the Radeon X1600.

Well actually it affects all the Aperture preview images in the Aperture browser, which I have on the Apple 17in studio display (original G5 graphics card) and only occasional full screen views on the Cinema display (X800XT card), so I don't think its the latter, unless they interact/interfere in some way.

When I make certain adjustments on certain images I get either a full image or a portion of it covered with crazy green linear patterns (I'll try and get a grab and upload it).

This happens on 3 different monitors and whether the image is full-screen, or the other view options. It also happens with two different libraries.

Interestingly, if I switch the view type (going from Full back to the option with the film strip on the bottom, for example), I can see the full image again with no grid patterns. But it's really slowing down my editing.

Aperture also seems to 'remember' if the image has been covered with the green splurge in that particular view before. If I return to it, I see the green pattern again.

Any ideas?

I have the same issues - but haven't found anything yet. We're going to bring it into a local tech to see what they recommend? So far, some Mac buddies have suggested saving our pictures into a separate library, then re-installing Aperture software. Haven't tried that yet....but I'll keep you posted. VERY frustrating - our pictures are all currently ruined!!

I started having the green line problem a week ago, or so, I think it was after I upgraded to Snow leopard.
Searched here today and found your thread ... and tried out some of your suggestions. Here's more to add:
My problem is the green lines appearing in the preview above the filmstrip, only after I'd made some adjustments (some with NIK). They disappear when I go to the Master, and when I enter full screen mode.... as many of you have described.

When I export the green-lined version, the lines are not in the exported jpg.
Also, when I place the loupe over the image (As you can see here http://stjamesanglicanchurch.ca/Extra/aperture_green.jpg ) the lines are not under the loupe either.
Very weird, but since the lines are absent from the export, i think this is workable for me.
