HP printer scanner could not be initialized

New to Mac but here goes. I have my printer hooked up to Airport Extreme and can print but the scanner won't work. I get the error "Scanner could not be initialized". Here's where things could have maybe gone wrong for me.
I did download the latest driver. From some searching around I have read I should not have. Is this correct????? How can I check what driver I even downloaded? It was yesterday and I am don't know how where to check what I downloaded.
My HP Setup Assistant still doesn't recognize my printer but it does work??
I really dislike this. Thanks for your help and HELP!!!

HP Deskjet f4200 is what I'm working with. Got the Cannon printer for free, would it benefit me to just install and use it? Less headache?

Network printing and network scanning are two different things. As for downloading the latest updates it's usually a good idea.
If I were you, I'd install the probably bloated HP software, then check software update for files and then uninstall and re-install the HP software.
That's what allowed me to get full functionality out of my, (albeit different model-7280), AIO Device.
One thing I made a point of getting when looking for a printer was a network interface on it, (ethernet), as well as USB and the built in wireless.

Sometime last year there was a big issue with HP all in one printers and scanning. Referring to:

There seems to be multiple issues here. The original poster indicated a problem with a networked HP All-In-One device such as the C5100, C6100, C6200, C7200 series. I have experienced the same issue with all three Macs at my home and our Photosmart C6150.

First, let me tell you what didn't work for me:
1. Rebooting the Macs
2. Rebooting the printer
3. Rerunning the HP Setup Assistant
4. Running the HP All-in-One Device Chooser

Now let me tell you what does work:
1. Uninstall the HP software using the HP Uninstaller (inside Applications > Hewlett-Packard)
2. Reinstall the 9.7.1 software from the HP website

What breaks the scanner is the HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 from OS X Software Update. So until Apple or HP release better drivers, you need to tell OS X Software Update to ignore this update. Do this as follows:
1. Run Software Update (under the Apple menu)
2. Highlight HP Printer Drivers Update 1.1.1
3. Go to the top menu and select Update > Ignore Update
This will prevent your Mac from downloading the HP Printer Driver 1.1.1. If you have multiple Macs, you'll have to do this for each Mac.

So I do believe I did install this 1.1.1 update. How do I uninstall it?

I have no idea.
All I can tell you is that I installed the 1.1.1 update and all is well. But again, did you try the uninstall and reinstall? In your position if you haven't already, check for the up to date files at HP. Make sure 1.1.1 is installed. Apply the HP update then check software update to see if anything else pops up.

I have similar problems with a newly acquired HP Deskjet F2280. Before this I had a HP F380 which worked without problems when connected via Time Capsule or direct. The F2280 will only print B&W, and will not scan when connected via Time Capsule. I have contacted HP and followed their advice but this does not work either (see copy of e mail from their help desk below). Advice would be appreciated to solve this one!
