10.5.8 update -- blue screen of death

I used software update this afternoon to install the newest (10.5.8) system update on my Mac Pro. For the past 90 minutes its been on the blue screen with the spinning grey lines in the center.

I have not wanted to interrupt it -- suggestions?

The only significant piece of software I can think of that might be causing an issue is Default Folder X. I haven't got any other customizations that should matter...

PowerMac, Powerbook, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

I've had the same problem in the past with updates. Once in a great while, it will just hang up. Simply powering off and back on has always resolved the issue.

same problem. no luck starting back up after a restart. my mac pro just sits at the blue screen with the spinning gear coming back every 5 or so seconds trying to start up. i can't even get the optical drive open to get an install disc so i can get to the disk utility. any ideas?

This has happened to me on logging out. My iMac G5 has power problems and doesn't like turning on so I have it set to turn on in case of a power failure. What I do is unplug it which is a "power failure" so it turns itself on.

But anyway, when this happens, I turn it off.

hmmmm. i tried unplugging and re-plugging the power. i did opt-cmd-p-r. i was able to get the optical drive open by booting up to the startup disc selector by pressing option. repaired disc permissions, and repaired disc, but the machine still won't start up. i guess i'll just call apple in the morning. so frustrating, don't know what i did.

try booting into Safe Boot holding down shift till u see the gray apple and spinning gear… u need to run disk utility repair disk permissions and verify disk prior to installing any updates incase there is any corrupted files on your drive. Make sure you run it with no running applications… as far as the blue screen goes it could be a login item preventing you from starting up.

hey. thanks for the help. i did as you suggested, but i still could not boot up. i ended up doing an archive and install, preserving my settings, and now everything works perfect.
