Question

.mts files - I thought Final Cut Pro 7 was going to have

a solution for these.... If I had the camera, I know I could use Log & Transfer, but I don't. I do have the entire folder on my hard drive, but they still won't import. Is a conversion software like Voltaic the only solution here?

Hmmm... wishful thinking maybe, it was never suggested by any official source that I heard of myself. Still, I guess thats besides the point at this stage.

Joel, are you certain you have the full (bdmv) folder containing all the various subfolders of which the stream (mts clip) folder is just one ... or is it just the folder with the mts files in?

Yes, BDMV folder with 2 files: INDEX.BDM & MOVIEOBJ.BDM and 3 folders: CLIPINF, PLAYLIST, & STREAM Inside STREAM are the .mts files.

I can do the conversion with Voltaic, but I did speak with Apple sales person about this... guess they didn't know what FCP 7 was really going to do.

Gotcha.

Well if you have the full folder then you ought to be able to read the files through Log and Transfer (has been the case since FCP6) and that is probably the function to which the Apple sales tech was referring.

Try dumping the entire BDMV folder into a parent folder and then point L&T at the parent and see if the files are recognized that way. Failing that, if you have it, then you'll find the transcode to an FCP compatible quicktime codec very much faster with Toast than with VoltaicHD.

I tried putting the BDMV folder into a parent folder.... no luck. Looks like it's the transcode route. Thanks for your help.

I wonder if I could get the shooter to come over with the camera and we put the folder back onto the camera card, if that would work?

If the shooter still as the original footage on the card then you're good.

Trying to put things back onto a SDHC card with AVCHD - not a good plan at all. It might work - but it may completely confuse the card and that'll be the end of that.

Voltaic, Toast, and Adobe Media Encoder will all do the trick.

Okay, thanks for clarification.
I just tried your suggestion to make a diskimage with Toast.... unfortunately that didn't work, either. So, I give up on Log & Transfer - it's on to Voltaic or another conversion app.

Really? That's odd.

You added the .mts files to a blu-ray project, saved it as a disk image (without re-encoding obviously) and then mounted the disk image and FCP didn't detect it in Log and Transfer?

Just did it again - added to Blu-ray window, clicked on save as disk image. Then Toast mounts disk image. Go to FCP 7, choose log and transfer. When I go to choose the disk image nothing happens. When I select inside, BDVM, the error message comes up - BDVM contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Seems like it should work - can you tell if I'm missing a step?
