iSight not working with Skype

I bought a new MacBook Pro 13 inch about a week ago and this is my first experience with Mac, although I've been using Windows for many years.
I downloaded the latest version of Skype for Mac and installed it. I made sure iSight is marked in the preferences of Skype and I can see myself in the window there. I have quit iChat, iMovie, and Photo Booth. Don't really know how to check to see if iSight might be in use by anything else.
When I try to make a test video call on Skype the video part does not work, only the audio. I was under the impression that my iSight cam should work but iChat won't come up. I have no video in Skype.
Can anyone give me some idea of what to do next? I've also sent my question to the Skype support team. Couldn't find any helpful info on their website or in their forums.
Thanks,
JillyBeanWV

Welcome to Discussions, JillyBeanWV

Look in the Dock. Any app that is running will have a small dot next to it. Ones that do not have the small dot are not running.

Though not all inclusive, this list shows many of the apps that can use your iSight:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013310

The "Help" for any app that is running will answer most of your questions. If you need more assistance with any Apple topic, you can find it by searching or posting in the relevant Apple Discussions Forum:

http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa

When I try to make a test video call on Skype the video part does not work, only the audio. I was under the impression that my iSight cam should work but iChat won't come up. I have no video in Skype.

You should not be trying to use both Skype and iChat at the same time. I think your posted comment about " iChat won't come up." here is not what you meant. I am going to ignore that unless you post back and tell me differently.

Consider relevant parts of both these Skype troubleshooting articles:

I set up video but it doesn't work on my Mac?

I am having problems with video in Skype for Mac.

Among the first things to check are that the correct video device (webcam) is selected in Skype, under Skype > Preferences > Video and also, in the same preference pane the checkbox ” Enable Skype video” , is checked.

Can anyone give me some idea of what to do next?

Having sent your question to the Skype support team, I think you are in good shape.

If you do not get the answers you need here, there should be nobody better able to tell you how to make Skype software work with your system than the Skype technical staff.

For more info or future Skype-specific issues like this one, you will probably get quicker answers by searching or posting in the appropriate Mac OS X forum:

http://forum.skype.com/

The Skype users there have likely already solved the same problem you are facing.

Of course, we will be happy to try to help here whenever we can.

Thanks, EZ Jim, for your quick response and help. I'm thankful to report that my Skype video is now working fine! 🙂

Skype Support was not quite as quick to respond as you were 🙂 but their step by step instructions of how to remove Skype and everything associated with it, then reinstall the program worked great.

I wasn't sure if I was experiencing a problem with Skype or the settings on my new MacBook Pro was the reason I posted here and also contacted Skype. I spent many hours looking through forums and knowledge bases on both sites before posting my question. I had tried removing the program and reinstalling once before but I now know that I hadn't really removed it all when I thought I had previously. So it was actually a combination of needing Skype support and not being familiar yet with a Mac.

Also, just to clarify, I wasn't completely understanding that iChat wouldn't start and be used by Skype. Now I understand better.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me. I sure appreciate it.

Jilly, can you give me instructions on how to uninstall Skype and reinstall it as I have no video since updating to 10.5.8, skype video has gone and I can't get it. But I can't see an uninstall option for Skype, do I just drag Skype from applications to the trash? and if I reinstall a new one from Skype site, will I have lost all my contacts in my Skype contacts list?
Thanks.

Nigel-66,

If you don't get an answer from JillyBeanWV, you will find answers to all Skype-specific questions like yours at https://support.skype.com/

... how to uninstall ... and reinstall ... will I have lost all my contacts in my Skype contacts list?

These particular questions are answered at:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en/help/guides/skypeformac/upgrading/uninstall.html

Uninstall Skype

To uninstall Skype, quit Skype, open your Applications folder and sadly drag your copy of Skype to the trash. Your user information, including your Contacts list and call log, is retained on your computer in case you should decide to try Skype again at a later date. These files can be found in “username/Library/Skype”. This directory containing harmless data can also be deleted.

For best Skype help, you can even participate in the dedicated Mac OS X Skype Discussions linked at http://forum.skype.com/   The Skype users who post there may have already answered your questions and will appreciate learning of your experiences and helpful tips you may have already discovered.

Of course, we will be pleased to try to help here if we can, but you may get quicker or better help from actual Skype users.

Cheers,
EZ Jim

Hey EZ JIM, Jilly,

I just purchased a Mac book pro this weekend, took it out of the box and installed Skype.
I tried to have a video call and the person I was calling couldn't see me, although I could see my own image on the screen. I have read all the threads of similar complaints and could not rectify the problem with the limited information that was available.
My webcam works fine as I can see and take pictures through the Photo Booth application, as well the camera did work very briefly on the first call I made.

I am running MAC OS X Ver: 10.6.1
Skype Version: 2.8.0.722

My macbook has a built in Camera isight.

I need to know if this is a bug with Skype that is being repaired, or has already been repaired.
I am extremely frustrated and am prepared to close my skype account as a result as there seems to be no information whatsoever to repair this problem that I could find.

I've sent a message to Skype people to see if they can help rectify the problem, but it looks like Jilly solved it by removing Skype and reinstalling it?

Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you.

Welcome to Discusions, AllenTT

Did uninstalling Skype and reinstalling it fix the problem for you like it did for JB?

Did you use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after you reinstalled?

Hello EZ,

Thanks for responding,

I tried uninstalling Skype by dragging the app to the recycling bin and re-downloading and installing again, however unfortunately that didn't work.

I didn't use the Disk Utility because I'm not exactly sure how to do that, can you please give me some more information on how to do that ?

Thanks.

You're welcome, AllenTT

Are you using the Mac version of Skype in Mac OS X, or are you running a Windows® version on your iNtel Mac?

If you are using the Mac version, did you follow the uninstall instructions in Skype (and quoted above) or did you really move the Skype app to a folder called "recycling bin" instead of your Mac's "Trash"?

Did you empty the Trash before reinstalling the latest version of Skype from http://www.skype.com/ ?

I didn't use the Disk Utility because I'm not exactly sure ... how to do that ?

• Click on Mac OS X Desktop so the word "Finder" shows
next to the  in the upper left corner of your display.

• Use the Finder > Go > Utilities menu command to open your Utilities Folder.

• Double-click on the "Disk Utility" icon to launch the Disk Utility application dialog window.

• Click once on the icon for your Startup Disk in the sidebar at the left side of the window.

• Click once on the "First Aid" tab in the upper center of the window.

• Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button in the lower part of the window.

• Let the computer run until you see a message that repairs are complete.
Permissions repair can take several minutes or even a few hours the first time you do it.
(If permissions cannot be repaired, Disk Utility will give you further instructions.)
• As usual, Mac Help can give you more information. Clicking the User uploaded file button
in the lower left corner of the Disk Utility window will give you context sensitive Help.

Hello EZ,

So I tried the skype and it still didn't work.
Giving up on Skype I tried to have a video convo through MSN messenger (downloaded off the internet) and that didn't work either. Went back to Skype to have a audio conversation and surprisingly the video started working..... I have no idea what happen other than the MSN was conflicting with Skype in some way or another and by trying to have a video convo through MSN it seemed to fix the problem....

Very odd, but it seems to be working now, hopefully that helps somebody who come across the same problem.

Welcome to Discussions, heatherdd

Because you have already tried reinstalling Skype and everything else already suggested here, consider these possible remedies for your different problem:

... skype is saying that my camera is being used by another application.

(1) You do not post which Mac and Mac OS you are using, so I cannot tell you exactly how to do this, but, if you need it, you can get assistance via your Mac's Help menus.

Start by checking that your Mac's System Preferences ... > Accounts > Login Items do not automatically launch any apps that use your iSight. If you use any widgets that access iSight, be sure not to launch them before trying to use Skype either.

While it is certainly possible to have multiple applications that can use iSight open at the same time, as explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2411

iSight can be used by only one application at a time.

Applications, login items, or widgets that are already using your Mac's iSight, whether in your current or a different user account, will give you the "in use" or "no camera" error. If you cannot find the conflict, shut down your Mac and power up again to resolve this problem.

(2) When you shut down (do NOT merely restart) your Mac, you should also shut down your modem and, if you use one, your router. Wait about thirty seconds and restart the modem. Wait for its self-test to complete. If you need help, see the users guides that came with your equipment. Then, restart your router and allow its self-test to run to completion. Finally, restart your Mac. Then, with no widgets or other apps that can use your iSight running, launch Skype and see if your problem persists.

(3) If the problem still exists after restarting, try every relevant suggestion re: your iSight from Apple's article entitled "How to Troubleshoot iSight."

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090

The reset suggested there often resolves problems like yours. If not, it may help you identify the source of the problem so you can take the required actions to get your system working properly.

I have tried everything that other people have tried and it is still not working for me.

(4) If your problem is not resolved by any help you get here or from the Skype forum, your Mac may have a hardware problem.

If after carefully following all relevant suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your iSight still does not work, and if your iSight is not recognized in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

You do not post a location, either, so if you do not have local access to Apple Service, you can use the info here: http://www.apple.com/contact/

(5) If you need to post back for more help, next time you are logged into Discussions, please identify ( and "Save") your Mac, OS, and general location (country) in your "My Settings" information at

http://discussions.apple.com/usersettings!default.jspa

If you do not want to include this information in your user Profile, you can enter this information in every post each time you ask a question.

It will also be helpful if you let us know whether you ever had Skype working on this or any other Mac and whether your iSight works with any app in any user account.

(6) Please let us know what works for you. It may help someone else who has the same or similar problem.

We will watch for your reply.

Cheers,
EZ Jim
