How long do you have to charge iphone the first time when you receive it? Is there any kind of indicator light that it's charging?

the iphone screen will show a battery pic on the screen, the recommended charge for a new iphone is about 12 hours, then completely drain the battery though normal use then charge the battery again until the battery icon is full then you will be fine after this initial charge you can charge it whenever you want
just dont keep the iphone on charge for long periods of time 1- the battery will be ruined 2- the iphone itself will get warm

Do you have a link where this is provided by Apple as a recommendation?

Once the battery is completely charged, charging stops while the iPhone remains connected to a power source. I connect my iPhone to a power source at night before going to bed and leave it connected so I begin each day with a fully charged battery. This has not and is not ruining the battery.
