Hide schools Wifi password?

On my Mac when I try to connect to my schools Wifi or any wifi airport or network, there is an option to "show password" so you can see the password as you type

well thats the problem, my schools IT technician doesn't know how to use macs but what she does know now is, if myself or someone was to connect to the wifi network and click "show password" we would see the password and she doesn't want us to do that

So, is there a password protector program out there? or maybe a way to deactivate this

Even a different program that will connect to wifi networks and not have this function so my IT will type in the password and not have a second thought (coz i would never show anyone the password and she knows that shes just following protocol) instead of using the airport software on this mac

anything would be helpful

if i do not add to key chain then ill need to go to the IT every day to put the password in that would get very annoying for her.

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Yes and no. If they are using a PSK (pre-shared key; a.k.a. "a password"), you can see it. End of story. Even if you could hide it in the UI, you can see it where it's stored on disk. This is true of Windows as well (use REGEDIT.EXE), Linux, and cell phones as well. It was your IT department's choice to go with the pre-shared key (simple password), they know that it's stored as plain text on your computer an visible to you.

If they wanted more security than that, they'd use WPA2 enterprise. That's why there's WPA2 enterprise, 802.1x certificates, radius, etc. That eliminates the need of pre-shared keys (passwords). They issue the machine a certificate to connect to the network (probably restricted to the machine's network hardware address), and if they ever think it's compromised, they revoke it at the network and the cert won't work again. A different cert for each machine. They can also provide a per-user cert in addition to the system cert.

So, no, you can't disable the show password checkbox, but there's really no point to it either).

Your administrator, like many, is taking the wrong approach.

If she's that concerned about security, she needs to implement an 802.1X solution.

Just relying upon people not to "spread" the Wi-Fi password is next to useless.

(You should let IT know there are a number of utilities available to "recover" the password from Windows machines, such as this one and a number of others available from less reputable sources.)

Its fine that you can see it where it's stored on disk. All i need is to get rid of the "show password" check box because she'll type it in, ill get access and no one will know how to get it later. (apart from me) but that's fine because who would i tell? its a bit stupid

i just need a secondary Airport program that will search and find, connect and not have 'show password' check box

Any??
