Address Book can't sync with Google

Hi,

I've been trying to sync my contacts with Google Contacts for the past two days, but I can't seem to make it work. It keeps saying "Incorrect Account or Password", but it actually doesn't even connect to Google (I used Cocoa Packet Analyzer to sniff the traffic and no packet was sent).
If I login with a different user, however, it just works.

I've already tried deleting my Address Book preferences and application support folder, it doesn't fix it.
And BTW, when I reset Address Book and launch it, at first it's empty, but after a few seconds it automagically (don't ask me how) recover my contacts. I've got an Address Book archive on my desktop, but I presume it shouldn't be loading it without asking me, right?

Any help would be much appreciated as I'd rather not move everything to a new user account just to make syncing work. Thanks! 🙂

Hello Michele:

Welcome to Apple discussions.

I have not done it, but this from the help menu should work:

Address book>preferences>general.
Synchronize with Google
Click agree
Enter your Google account name and password and then click OK.
You can only sync one Google account
Click sync now.

All of this is from the address book help menu.

Upgraded to Snow Leopard and I was experiencing this problem. Checking with Gmail help @ http://www.google.com/support/contactsync/, it says "If you enter your email address and password correctly, but the password isn't being accepted, try repairing your keychain". I tried to repairing my keychain twice, no problem found and the error message remains. I turned back maybe 15 mins later, guess what, it talks to google and the password accepted, now I am able to sync Address Book with Google. Hope this helpful to you!

I have follopwed your instructions - except I cannot find where to "Click Sync Now"

I set up the syncronize with Google with my gmail account details and agree to the terms. It wasy "connecting with Google" very briefly and then nothing else happens.

Where is ths "Sync Now" button?

I see the sync button right at the top of my iMac - I was expecting it to be somewhere in Address Book - sorry.

Is there a way of automating the sync to happen regularly, or will it only work by manually clicking that button?

I have 10.5.8 on my Mac, no option to sync with Google in the Address Book preferences. I read in a few places that it required 10.5.3 only. Can anyone confirm if it only works with certain versions of Leopard?

I have the same issue. Just got a Pre. Able to sync my Address book to Yahoo, but not Google (no Google option).

Got it:

Open a text editor (I use TextWrangler), paste this:

"{ Devices = { red-herring = { 'Family ID' = 10001; }; }; }"

Save as:

"~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPod.plist"

mikeuy, try my suggestion. It has worked consistently on a MacBook, a MacBook Pro and a G5.

i've already have a com.apple.ipod.plist , for my ipod classic i changed the family id from 11 to 10001

but no google sync option,
Anyone any idea how to proceed ?

Tried modifying my existin plist file. Tried the new 'red-herring' one above, and on my 10.5.8 macbook, I cannot get the Sync with Google button to appear 😟
Have Apple removed it? They are trying to distance themselves from google after all. It certainly wouldn't surprise me. Apple can be pretty ruthless!

I had the same problem and changing com.apple.iPod.plist didn't work. I finally got it to work when I changed the com.apple.iPod.plist on my user /Macintosh HD/Users/YOURNAME/Library/Preferences as well as the Macintosh HD one. Hope this helps for those having problems. Joe.
