iMovie contains some great jingles (I like the simple piano pieces) but they get repetitive from video to video. Can anyone suggest another place on the web where I can get either free or reasonably priced piano tacks suitable for use as background music in my iMovie videos? The videos are not for commercial use but I do upload to YouTube.

This site looks great but I tried to download a piece of music and it appears to be merely a link back to the source. In iTunes the music appears with a little broadcast icon beside the track name just like iPhoto albums that arte uploaded to Web Gallery. On the Musopen site when downloading the site suggests right clicking and choosing "Save As" but control clicking on my Mac doesn't offer that option. It does offer "Open in iTunes" but that merely leads to the music being on a link.

This is not satisfactory because if I put that music intyo a video I am totally dependent on the original source continuing to offer that piece of music which is not certain. I therefore cannot afford to waste days of my time editing the video to match that music when the permanence of that music in the video cannot be guaranteed.

Is there some way of saving the music to my hard drive that I am unaware of or is that simply how it is with that site?

My apologies, I managed to figure it out. Control click does give an option to "Save linked file to downloads" ands clicking on the download icon for it opens it as file saved in iTunes which works fine.

It is a brilliant site I found several pieces by Ravel which are perfect for my videos and lots more besides. Thank you for the link.

Okay, so orchestral music is taken care of does anyone know of a site that has sound effects? I particularly would like to find the sounds of an orchestra tuning up.

joh,
did you ever played around with Garageband ?

I'm no musician, but GB offers even for the 'musical challanged' nice features:
• the loops section, select *Podcast Sounds* and I get offerd hundreds of ready-made jingles (I must omit: I downloaded most of them from my iDisk, there was once a special offer for dotmac users..)
• even better: GB offers you 'tons' of loops (piano solo too), you can 'stick together' as LEGO-bricks.. GB cares for correct key and timing.. experiment, and you'll get soon .. music 🙂

best of all: free for use, free for any publishing, even for commercial projects.

don't hesitate: start your musician-career with GB now! 😉

Karsten,
Garageband I love and I have made quite extensive use of it in the past and will continue to do so. Unfortunately, like writing poetry is stringing words together, the process of making worthwhile music by stringing loops together takes time (lots of it).

There will no doubt be times when it is the perfect solution but at the moment I have started a project of a series of teaching videos (I am an art teacher) and where several videos are in process finding other sources for ready made music is most logical.

I was very pleased with the result I got in the first video just relying on the jingles already built into iMovie ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeSO5fCi7WU ) but it was immediately apparent that relying on the small number of jingles there would become boring and repetitive across 6 or more videos.

My first thought was to look at the jingle style loops in Garageband but everything in iMovie was taken from Garageband because they are the same (although Garageband has lots of extra short loops of individual riffs not in iMovie, there are no extra jingles or foley sounds)

That is why the Musopen site mentioned above by Apple Man 1958 is quite sensational, although it only does orchestral music but within that genre the selection is huge. Apart from figuring out how best to save the music to hard drive I have found it a superb site for classical music. Check it out - here is the link again: http://www.musopen.com/

Now I am looking for both foley effects (I would like the sounds of an orchestra or band tuning up) and a royalty free site for other genres of music (I would love to be able to use some jazz, both traditional and smooth or lounge).

One thing I love about the internet is the artistic sharing which occurs. Musopen allows musicians to share classical music, I am offering freely available how-to-draw clips on YouTube, You are helping beginners to edit video in this forum. We are all participating in the creation of a new culture that is starting to evolve because of the internet. It is a wonderful thing to be part of.

Adam,

I am aware of this site and others that are similar but I am an artist and at 40 bucks per song it would quickly make the cost of an individual video very expensive. If I created 3 or 4 videos in a week, each with 3 or 4 bits of music (music within a video needs to change to reflect the tempo of the dialog and action so more than one song is necessary) it quickly mounts up in cost. (I know there are volume discounts but at their price of 3 songs for 90 dollars that is still a big hit.

This is all very well for commercial usage where a video is being sold or for a one off artistic project but it is unreasonably priced for many situations. With lots of downloads this must be like a license to print money on their part.

The last disc that I purchased from Royalty Free cost me 79 bucks and I got 40 selections. You get appx 10 tunes, in different tempos, that come in 4 different lengths, 15 and 30 second spots and 2 longer versions of the same theme. I often import them into GarageBand or Logic Express, chop them up, split copy and paste, and with a little effort I can create different versions of the same theme which gives me even more songs. I've seen the sites that want to charge 40 bucks or more for 3 minutes of music but this is not one of them. 80 bucks divided by 40 selections works out to be 2 bucks a hit. Seems reasonably for quality music that is completely reusable and royalty free. Adam

You have a very sensible approach and they do have an extensive library of music that is perfectly adapted to video backgrounds. I can't say I would discount them as I am sure I will end up getting something from them that I can't get elsewhere, however even at the CD price it still is a lot of money especially compared to the excellent classical music available for free at Musopen.

I do expect that I would source music from multiple sources depending on the individual project. Thank you for your input.

Tony
