quicktime/vlc and avi's

I have now solved the problem of being able to play avi's by downloading the VLC software;.. However its a bit cumbersome that if you click on a link to open it the system will not automatically find the right player (i.e VLC) to play the AVI with. Instead I get an error message and i need to select the right player to play it with ..

Is there anyway to get the Apple smarter about picking the right application to open files with?

Thanks

Mark

You can edit the "Open With" option by highlighting the file in the Finder and using the "Get Info" window.
Change the "default" open with application to your choice.
If you wish to have all .avi files open with VLC simply change the settings in the Get Info window and click the "Change All" button. Confirm your change by clicking OK in the next dialog window.
