Upgraded DVD-ROM drive having issues

I acquired a second-hand iMac 500 with CD-ROM drive. I upgraded it to a DVD-ROM drive (pulled from another iMac somewhere) and a larger (40GB) hard drive. I also replaced the dead clock battery.

Before I closed all the housing open during the upgrade, I booted and tested the hardware. I installed OS 10.1 / 9.2 from original discs and booted successfully into OS 10.1. I inserted a movie and it played beautifully.

But after spending the time to close everything up, I now find that the nothing will play in the drive. The drive is still functional, but the computer complains that "it is not readable by the system" and prompts me to eject, initialize, or continue. The disc won't mount. Tried the exact same discs that were functional minutes before the computer was put back together -- nothing works.

To troubleshoot, I've attempted:

Download 10.1 system updates -- successful
Reseting PRAM -- successful
Updating Firmware (4.1.9) -- successful
Booting system from CD -- failed

After my troubleshooting attempts, I can't even get the system to tell me the disc is not readable. It just spins up for a second and then never mounts. This happens with all original install discs, dvd movies, and third party discs. Ejecting requires a reboot.

The drive seems in good condition. Discs insert and eject smoothly, and the drive is quiet and clean sounding.

What haven't I tried?

If the problem recurs, and since you replaced both drives at the same time, check the jumper settings for the hard drive. The hard drive jumpers should be set to Master, not any other setting such as Slave or Cable Select. Some hard drives have more than one Master setting: Master (single drive) and Master (with Slave drive). For a slot-loader iMac G3, it needs to be Master (with Slave drive), because the optical drive is the Slave drive.

Some OEM optical drives used with the slot-loader iMacs also have a switch on the back edge. It is between the drive and the thin adapter board. It is used to set it to Master or Slave. If there is a switch, it is probably already set to Slave, but if it does not work with the hard drive set to Master, you may want to unscrew the adapter board on the optical drive to see if there is a switch there and confirm it is set to Slave.
