quicktime fried and won't go away

My older Quicktime quit and I've tried repeatedly to download the update but it won't install. Messge says "encountered unexpected error installing." It tries to configure the new version and says "error in writing to file." I tried the "repair quicktime" option and got the same. I tried to uninstall the defective Quicktime and it won't uninstall. Says "encountered unexpected error...error code 2330." I'm out of options, any thoughts?
Thanks, skip64

Jacumba - thank you. I was reluctant to use that cleanup utility for fear of damaging other software. The warnings that come with it are ominous. And Quicktime had worked well for a long time then seemed to have been corrupted and quit working, and as I said I couldn't make it go away, even using the control panel uninstaller. But I went ahead and used the MS cleanup program and it made the old inoperable quicktime go away. So, thanks again, sorry to be skeptical.

I'm back... After cleaning up after the old Quicktime, I tried to download the new one and it won't install. I repeatedly get the message "error writing to file...verify that you have access to that directory." Any idea what this means? I'm he only user of this computer, I didn't realize I had any access issues, and haven't in the past.

Thanks in advance

I'm trying one more time to try to find out why I can't install Quicktime Player, and now I also have lost iTunes and can't reinstall that. The problem SEEMS to be my inabiltiy to complete remove the old Quicktime that had failed on my computer. I followed the directions on the Apple.com support site that suggested among other things to completely remove iTunes and Quicktime. I got to #16 in the 20-step process which said to open Program Files in My Computer and right click on the Quicktime folder and Delete. I repeatedly get an error message saying it can't delete that folder. And when I try to install iTunes and Quicktime I continue to get a message saying "error writing to file." Again, any help is appreciated.

skip64, lets see if I can help you out here. First thing is you must be a administrator account. Uninstall QT using the add\remove control panel. Then do a search of the computer for any QT files and folders that were left over and delete them. Also go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete QuickTime qts and QuickTimeVR qtx.
If at some point K-Lite mega codec pack or QuickTime Alternative was installed on the computer they must be removed, they have been known to cause a problem.
You mentioned error 2330, which I have no idea what that is other than reading something about corrupt registry. CC-Cleaner if I have the name right, is supposedly free, someone did post here one time that it helped them, myself I would use it as a last resort for the registry, but that's just my opinion

Jacumba, thank you for trying to help. I was about to give up - but have made some progress. I have deleted dozens of mysterious Quicktime files found in a search of my hard drive. But two still refuse to go away. The "Quicktime" folder in "Program Files", and inside that is one subfolder called QTSystem, when I try to delete them I consistently get the message ERROR DELETING FILE OR FOLDER "Cannot delete QuicktimeMPEG.Resources: the directory is not empty." I hope that means something to someone.

One more time here, there's only one account on the computer, it's an administrator account. I'll go back to my original question, how can I get rid of the old Quicktime on my computer so I can reinstall a new one. Two QT files still won't go away and I still can't install a new Quicktime. For now I'm without Quicktime and iTunes and that looks to be permanent unless there's a fix I don't know about. Jacumba, I appreciate your efforts,

If I had the computer in front of me I would be able to get QT removed and installed, that is what makes it hard. You could try this link
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320081

For some reason the computer is not clean! I'd pull it out of the registry which will take anything off the computer. But I'm not the best person to tell you this because I take risk in there, but have 3 computers. I just had to re-install the OS two months ago, last time was 5 years ago, so thought I knew it well. You could check out the microsoft forum? Do you want to delete QT from the registry?
