Virus Scanning Status: Unknown

I have setup a new Mac mini server and am having a very difficult time trying to get the virus scanning portion of the mail services running. Incoming SMTP, Outgoing SMTP, IMAP, and Junk mail filtering are working properly however the Virus Scanning Status under Server Admin report status UNKNOWN and the Virus database is not updated. In addition, when configuring mail services under the Filtering section I can check the: Update the virus databases X time(s) everyday, however it will not save with that option selected. Also, there are no Virus or Virus Update Logs under the Mail services logs section.

The only information I have been able to locate that pertains to the Virus scanning are in the general server logs which I have listed below:

Aug 14 21:16:29 miniserver org.clamav.freshclam[2481]: ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/freshclam.log).
Aug 14 21:16:29 miniserver org.clamav.freshclam[2481]: ERROR: Can't open /var/log/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).
Aug 14 21:16:29 miniserver com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam[2481]): Exited with exit code: 62
Aug 14 21:16:29 miniserver com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Aug 14 21:16:33 miniserver org.clamav.clamd[2482]: ERROR: Can't initialize the internal logger
Aug 14 21:16:33 miniserver org.clamav.clamd[2482]: ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav.log in append mode (check permissions!).
Aug 14 21:16:33 miniserver com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.clamd[2482]): Exited with exit code: 1
Aug 14 21:16:33 miniserver com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.clamd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

I am new to the mail services on Mac OS X Server and would be very appreciative of any help or troubleshooting suggestions that could be provided. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the help! These steps appear to have resolved the issue with the virus definitions updating however the Virus Scanning Status still shows as Unknown. The Virus Database Updates log shows working updates however the /var/log/clamav.log is still blank. When I type the following

$ sudo ps U _clamav

PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND
23490 ?? Ss 0:00.00 freshclam -d -c 4

Any ideas on how I can get Virus Scanning to activate? Thanks again!

Still receiving the following errors:

Aug 17 20:38:58 miniserver org.clamav.clamd[23787]: ERROR: Can't initialize the internal logger
Aug 17 20:38:58 miniserver org.clamav.clamd[23787]: ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav.log in append mode (check permissions!).

Aug 17 20:38:58 miniserver com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.clamd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
