Can iTunes play with lid closed?

I am a newbie, so please excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question. I just moved from Windows world (after using it for 25 years) to MacBook Pro about 4 months ago.

I am using AiportExpress to stream music from iTunes to 3 different audio system throught my home. I would like play iTunes to play the music even when my MacBook lid is closed. I can't seem to get this work. Seems like such a basic function. Is it possible to play iTunes with lid closed? What am I missing?

Just thought i'd put my 2 cents in for why i'd like to be able to use itnes when the lid is closed, I use my 2012 Mid macbook pro to listen to music and do web browsing etc and I catch public transport alot so when im changing modes of public transport or something id like to be able to close the lid and keep the music playing because id be opening it up soon enough like 10 min to max of half hour, and well since i have made my macbook pro only use the nvidi card when realy needed it pretty much lives on the Intel gpu which is built into the cpu and stays realy realy cool so overheating wouldnt be an issue. Though on the other hand if im not playing music i would of cource prefer that it went to sleep as per usual. Another feature that would be nice but not compulsory would be if i pulled out the headphones it should just pause the music and go to sleep as per normal. I have an LG p1 laptop that i use to do this with and it never heated up to much when i used it in this way.

It would be easy to put this feature in at Apples end with NO RISK of burning out a machine. I have used my MBP for many years connected to a cinema display in my studio in clamshell mode (with the lid shut and connected to external display and keyboard/mouse) and Apple have allowed this process which allows me to run Logic Studio as well as many Native Instruments plug-ins simultaneously as well as the other stuff I have running often taking machine loading up quiet high, which I am sure would burn out a machine far faster than IF it was going to happen than simply playing an mp3 file. I would like to add that I do use a little program to boost fan speed automatically to keep machine a little cooler as I know the cooler a computer runs the longer it lasts, and with the studio speakers turned up you can't hear fans running anyway. So why do I need to download anything just so I can play music with the lid shut to keep display off and battery life up instead of just changing a simple tick box that says "prevent system from sleeping if music playing when lid is shut"

Congrats!

This was mentioned over 5 years ago in this very thread!

???

As you just noted you don’t need to download anything...
