Problem with MIDI keyboard input.

Hi,

I am trying to use a Yamaha PSR-275 MIDI keyboard with GarageBand 2.0.1 but am experiencing some difficulty. I'm trying to record into GB from the keyboard but it seems that some notes are being missed or barely audible, some are dragged for too long, and there's a weird droning noise that runs throughout the track.

In the Yamaha keyboard manual, it says to connect the keyboard to the computer via UX16 USB/MIDI Interface, but I've used the MIDISPORT UNO by M-Audio. Could that be the problem?

Besides that, there are some troubling details that I'm not quite sure how to handle. Here they are:

GARAGEBAND:
Under Preferences, in the Audio/MIDI tab it says "Audio Input: No devices found"

SYSTEM PREFERENCES:
Under the Sound>Input it also says "No input devices found"

AUDIO MIDI SETUP UTILITY:
Under Audio Devices>System Settings>Default Input: "No Devices"

Under MIDI Devices, it is configured to PSR-275 (which is a setting that I created myself).

YAMAHA WEBSITE:
I contacted tech support and am awaiting their response. There were no downloadable drivers on the site.

I've tried changing the configuration of the MIDI wires into the keyboard as a last resort but no improvement. I believe that only the MIDI OUT should be connected ... right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've spent lots of time trying to solve this problem without much luck.

Sincerely,

Steve Cicione

I don't have an answer to your main question, but I'll tackle the side questions:

Under Preferences, in the Audio/MIDI tab it says "Audio Input: No devices found"

As it should be, you haven't connected an Audio Device.

SYSTEM PREFERENCES:

Under the Sound>Input it also says "No input devices found"

I'm not familiar with the machine you have, but if it doesn't have a built-in mic, or a Line-in, then that sounds right, same answer as above.

AUDIO MIDI SETUP UTILITY:

Under Audio Devices>System Settings>Default Input: "No Devices"

Also the same answer.

Under MIDI Devices, it is configured to PSR-275 (which is a setting that I created myself).

Sounds right. The only device you have connected is a MIDI device.

I guess I would double check whatever settings you have in AMS to make sure they are not causing your main problem.

I was having almost the exact same problem
I have a psr-270 and an m-audio uno.... after hours of forum searching and trying to fix it on my own.... i did.

on my keyboard there are 3 separate buttons to control reverb, dual and harmony sound effects on or off. i switched the dual button to "off" and it fixed everything.

works perfectly now

hope this helps in your situation.. good luck

As an after thought, is the Local control on your Yamaha set to off? For your Yamaha to work as a midi controller you have to set Localcontrol to off. This disables the routing to the internal voices and sends mid info to your midi out. Your manual should have this info. If you do not have the manual. you can download a copy at Yamaha.com
Hope this helps.

Steve,
Went to Yamaha US -Musical Instruments-Support-Manuals and there is a manual for your machine and a 230? It is an update. On page 60 there are instructions on how to connect your midi outs and ins to a computer, including how to turn off LocalTalk. For me to use my Yamaha as a midi keyboard or to have it controlled by my sequencer, I must turn LocalTalk off.
