No sound for incoming text messages?

I have sound turned on, a sound is selected for incoming text messages, and ringer volume is turned all the way up. When a call comes in, it's pretty loud. Yet when a text comes in, it just vibrates. I can't figure out how to fix this. Any help? Thanks.

I'm having the same issue after installing OS 3.0.1 but it only happens when it is connected to another item by the dock connector. For example while it is sitting in the dock to charge or connected to my car radio or when using my Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2.

Audio notifications that work:
Incoming calls
Alarms set in the clock application
Connecting to the dock connector

Audio notifactions that are broken:
New text message - no sound but does vibrate
New mail - inconsistent
Sent mail - no sound
Calendar alerts - no sound
Lock sounds - no sound
Keyboard clicks - no sound

Basically everything that can be toggled in the Settings / Sounds panel. Restarting the phone has no effect on the issues.

I have this problem as well. It seems to happen intermittently, so no idea why! iPhone is not connected to anything.

I tend to get the vibrate happening ok, but it seems hit and miss as to whether I get the text message arriving sound. Sometimes it sounds, sometimes it doesn't - and that's with my sitting there watching it, so it's not that I just haven't heard it.

Any help greatly appreciated, it really frustrating!

I have the same problem
All sounds are working OK except for test messages.
In settings when trying to select an alternative text message sound - nothing works any more
You can click then and get a tick mark as 'selected' but no sound...

I'm having the EXACT same problem. Any help would be appreciated. Even when i choose an alternate sound in the text-message-sound menu it will not play a sample tone.

EDIT: also there is no clicking sound for the keys.

Tried all the advice regarding plugging headphones in and out
but in the end fixed it after 'resetting all settings' twice

Now OK

I have this issue as well. The phone isn't connected to anything, the ringer is on and turned up, and sometimes I'll get the text message tone, and other times it will just vibrate. I've even gone so far as to do a full restore, and it still happens. Is there a fix for this, or is it a bug we will have to live with until the next update?

I have had this problem too

A few solutions include:

Go to your settings, go to sounds, touch text sounds and tick the sound you want again, if you hear no noise still, then your phone maybe thinking its got headphones in it. Just stick your headphones in, and take them out again. If that doesn't work, turn your phone off and turn it back on again after 10 seconds. If it still doesnt work then hard reset your system by holding the standby and home button together until the apple logo reappears.

Generally one of these always works, worst case scenario is to restore your phone completely, or take it to Apple themselves.
