You can run Windows on your Mac using BootCamp but you will need a Windows XP or Vista installer.
Then you can use IE.

Read the BootCamp installation guide all the way through before you try to create a partition and more importantly, if you have important files on this new Mac already, make sure to back them up.

You will also need anti virus software for Windows.

Running IE 5.x on a Mac is not going to help. Microsoft stopped updating the IE for Mac 3 years ago with no updates available.

Well, if the system asks for IE 5.5, it may not really be using any IE-specific features. You may (note the possibility) be able to fake it.

Go into Safari, in the Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and turn on the "Develop" menu. Then, in the new Develop menu, select "Internet Explorer 5.5" in the "user agent" submenu. Then try the site again. No guarantees, but it is worth a try.

You may want to consider CrossOver Mac (www.codeweavers.com) this allows you to run numerous Windows applications on your Mac without having to install a virtual Windows systems [Bootcamp or Parallels] (saving you bank). CrossOver Mac is based on the WINE project which installs a bare bones Windows ‘environment’ within your Mac. I use it to run IE 6 – needed it to access Outlook Web Access, without any problems and I have MS Office 2003 installed as well.
