How to stop iTunes from launching when using Keyboard media keys

Hi,

I love the media keys on my MacBook and Apple wireless keyboard for playing, pausing, changing tracks etc with iTunes, but there are other than can utilize the media keys, like Spotify for instance. However, if I have iTunes closed, when I hit the Play key, iTunes will automatically launch, and will intercept any subsequent presses of just the play/pause button. Is there a way to stop this annoying behavior? I haven't found anything in the Keyboard shortcut system pref.

thanks.

Same. Here's the bug report I submitted if you want a starting point. I'd suggest changing it at least a little though.

{quote:title=anarchistic wrote:}
Summary:
The play key (F8) is broken when using Snow Leopard.

Steps to Reproduce:
Attempt to start media playing inside any 3rd party application or Apple's own Logic Pro and iTunes will open.

Expected Results:
iTunes should not open. iTunes should only open when it's instructed to open by the user. Instead the media from the 3rd party application should play.

Actual Results:
iTunes opens and starts playing upon the next press of the Play button.

Regression:
It doesn't happen when QuickTime is open (even without a file loaded). Yay! QuickTime is clocking up a lot of sleep time on my computer... And iTunes won't respond to the play key when it's open at the iTunes Store page. Or if you unset the execute bit from the app. 🙂

Notes:
A number of people are very angry at this. It's worse than a lot of the crap we had to put up with using Windows. Seriously, it's time to revert the change. I'm having this problem, too. Agreed... Apple needs to revert this, or give us a setting where we can choose.

SO FRUSTRATING!

I was hoping to use my Mac Mini as a media center but this is preventing me from doing so...

For now I guess I'll just leave QuickTime running all the time. In the meantime I've submitted a bug and opened a ticket with Apple Support.

I received a response to my formal bug report today, and it was reclassified to exactly the same 'original bug ID' as MWYada above. I've tried to follow the instructions to follow the status of the original bug, but I don't seem to be able to do this (maybe I don't have enough privileges on my basic account?). If anyone is following the status of bug 7181014 could you please let us know more about it, or if you could tell me how to follow it myself that would be great. I'm wondering if Apple has truly classified it as a bug, or has just created a repository for complaints...

Sorry if this is up somewhere else and I hadn't noticed. This was a life saver a few months ago, but I'd not like to try a different setup for myself and would like iTunes back. It seems to be killed altogether. For an unrelated reason, I did an OS-reinstall roughly a month ago - a bit surprised the re-install didn't override somehow, but I also have no idea what this script actually does, other than work.

Thanks!
