hard drive noise

My hard drive makes a scraping/clicking sound when it starts up or when I open an application or access any info on the drive otherwise it is quiet. This is only noticeable in a very quiet room. Is this normal? I ask this because I have an ibook G4 which is noiseless in comparison.
