DASHBOARD icon disappeared from Dock.how do I restore it?

I already tried making an alias icon and placing it down on the dock but when I accessed it one of the "widgets" would not quit unless I restarted the computer. How do I get the Dashboard icon back to functioning normally and to where it belongs so that I can access widgets it in the customary fashion ( by clicking the mouse etc) ? Thanks!
PS: This is on my Intel 24" iMac running 10.5.8

You don't make an alias to put an item in the Dock. Just drag the original to the Dock. Mac OS X will make its own link to the item.

That wouldn't have any effect on a Dashboard widget refusing to quit, though. That's more likely to be a problem with the widget itself. What widget was it that gave you this problem?

Nor does not having Dashboard in the Dock affect the ability to launch it via hot keys. I've never had Dashboard in my Dock and it works just fine from my hot keys. Check to make sure that the hot key you believe is correct is still set in the Dashboard preferences (it's at the bottom of the Exposé system preference pane).

Hope this helps.

Hey Dave...OK, I dragged the Dashboard app icon to the dock and its there..thanks.
(I shoulda known...DUH.)

To answer your question the "Mac Tips &Tricks" Video Tutorials wouldn't quit.

Only thing that isn't back to normal...F12 key does not bring Dashboard up, nor does clicking the mouse button while viewing another app screen like it used to ...anything?

.F12 key does not bring Dashboard up

Did you check the preference to make sure that F12 is still set as the hot key? Any other applications that might be taking over that key? Do the Exposé hotkeys still work?

nor does clicking the mouse button while viewing another app screen like it used to

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean by this. Can you explain further?

Is your system set up so that the function keys work first as media keys - that is, volume up/down, iTunes transport control, etc? If so, then you may need to hold down the Fn key for the hotkeys to work. This behavior can be changed in the Keyboard system preference; check the box that says "use all F1.. keys as standard function keys".

Hope this helps.
