and the arrow just spins. This happens for everyone. How long should this happen? Is something broken?

Just adding to the info-- I installed the update and deleted the faces.db files, and after taking several hours to rescan the library, it seems to work! Its only been a day, but so far its working about as well as I could have expected. I named myself in one photo and after a few minutes it found about a hundred matches, the vast majority of which were actually me, and then there were some false positives at the bottom. Pretty good based on one photo!

For now my only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a way to batch approve or disapprove of its naming. When I look at that screen and see that the first 50 photos are me, I want to select them all at once and say yes, but instead I have to click on each one. Its time consuming and I have a big library, so I'm sure its going to be a long while before I name all my photos. But its suggestions are working, which is exciting.

The way to batch approve is to click and drag the marker box around all the photos, they will all automatically go green, then you only need to single click on the false positives to turn them red. I wish there was a way to mass deny. I also wish there were a way to say no, this is not "Bob," but "Tom." in that may also be in the photos below section.

Oh, thanks for pointing out the batch approve, that does work. I was trying to use the shift key or something before.

Here's a question-- will it mess up their algorithms if I name childhood or baby photos of myself as myself? Maybe I should make a different name for myself for a few different childhood ages where my face might have changed a lot. And what about naming old photos of adults who have gotten wrinkles and white hair in the past 20 years-- will it be able to keep track of them as the same person?

Yep. It works. I tried doing it without deleting my faces.db, but it didn't work. But now that I have deleted the faces.db and that other file, it is working well. It does some people better than others. Some of the suggested matches are quite funny. I have 30k+ photos, and it will take me a while to get it all in.

I am trying to figure out how to make a video that is just one person's face over the course of 5 or 10 years. Sort of like a recorded version of what happens if you slowly drag over their face in the faces view. I is really great for me to do that with my kids. Any ideas? I guess this is the wrong thread for that.

Mass deny by holding down option while dragging the box around photos. The window will also scroll if you go past the bottom. Then, you just single click on each to "Approve." To change a name in this mode, right-click (or control-click) on the photo and choose "Name".

To force Faces to rescan your Library:

Note You will lose any work you’ve already done with Faces. This is to return to the very beginning.

Quit iPhoto.

Go to your Pictures Folder (or where ever you have your Library) and find the iPhoto Library there.

Right Click on it, and from the resulting menu select ‘Show Package Contents’. A Finder window will open and the Library will be exposed.

Find the following files:

face_blob.db
face.db

and move them to the trash.

Make no other changes.
