ICal is 'dead'

My iCal is dead. It shows the right day and month upon opening but the mini calendar at the bottom right is stuck on 2001 and will not respond to mouse clicks to move it on and I cannot set up calendar 'events' at all.

Nothing else is wrong although for a while I couldn't access iPhoto. It produced a message which read 'upgrade needed' and then closed down, time after time. However with the recent Mac updates it's now fine. I'm awaiting a 'fix' for iCal but perhaps I need to wait for 'Snow Leopard'.I cannot find any reports of this and the help guide is completely unforthcoming. Is anybody else having similar problems?

Yes, I am having the dame problem and more. All of my calendars have disappeared. can't post or edit events, etc. Just spent the better part of 2 hours with Mac support person - no luck in fixing the problem. His recommendation - take it into the mac repair shop.

I just started using my brand new Macbook Pro today and I cannot get iCal to work.

The small calendar is also stuck on January 2001, and I cannot add anything to the calendar at all. I tried syncing it with my iPhone, and everything else synced except the iCal. I tried importing the contents of another iCal, and it froze - I can't even close it without forcing it to quit.

Has anyone else figured out how to solve this problem?

My iCal has started "dying" on me also. The application opens, but my events, calendars, or to do's won't appear. The menu bar and icons are all "frozen." I can quit, but at this point all functionality of iCal is lost.

I recently updated to OS X 10.5.8 and also began adding events from Mail messages this week, around the same time the problem arose.

I suppose taking it to a mac repair shop is one possible solution but I have an idea that this is something that might have happened as a result of a software update - I'd be happier if I could pinpoint WHEN it started happening. However, I had similar problems with ipphoto. I simply got a message saying that I needed an upgrade and then iPhoto would crash. After update 10.5.8 it works fine. I'm hoping that it might be corrected by Snow Leopar. It works fine on another mac with Tiger. Thanks for commenting.

I'm wondering if 'Snow Leopard will fix it as I had a similar problem with iPhoto. On opening it a message would appear telling me that I needed an upgrade and that my photographs might look different - words to that effect. ~Then with update 5.8. it was corrected. But I can't guess what made iCal fail. I can't even say when I noticed it, so cannot pin it down to an update or install of any third party software.

This is exactly what is happening with mine. A similar problem happened with iPhoto for no reason I could fathom but update 5.8 apparently corrected it. I'm wondering if the release of Snow Leopard will do likewise for iCal. Meanwhile I'm using Google Calendar which does all that iCal does.

Yes EXACTLY the problem I am having - but not on another mac running Tiger. Odd, and annoying. I'm hoping that Snow Leopard will sort this out as 5.8 sorted iPhoto out.

My iCal is now working. Previously I tried everything posted on the Boards (turned off synching,removed iCal.plist and the Calendar caches) no luck.No success with Apple support person either Finally found the proper link for the OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update, downloaded and installed it - my iCal is up and running, at least for the moment.

Thanks. I've just tried that but the download 'doesn't happen' and, besides, my Mac update informs me that all my software is 'up to date'. I have an odd feeling that this plus other problems with synching etc started with the switch from .mac to .me.
Whenever I try to sync I'm told that my user name/passowrd are wrong yet I log in with them!?

But that's another topic....

Anyway, thanks for the link and I'm glad it sorted your problems out.

Mine is dead too. It opens, works for a second typically, then most controls freeze. Menus from the top produce dropdowns that immediately come back up as if they are taunting me. Completely worthless.

It's been broken for many months. I've given up on it. I've never experienced any Mac software as messed up as iCal.

Airport. A few days ago I installed the most recent security update and both of my computers wIll not operate Ical. I sometimes get a blank form of my calendar or a calendar that appears to be somewhat normal but I can not make any selection, add or delete on it. I can't even close the window but have to quit the program. I am certain that apple is aware of this problem so why don't they acknowledge it.

I can't understand it at all. I've tried everything with no luck. I'm hoping that it will be sorted out by Snow Leopard. I know update 5.8 didn't screw it up but I think the transition to .me from .mac may have done as it has screwed up synchronising as well. I'm putting a lot of hope in Snow Leopard - Hope not Faith.

I don't think it was 5.8. Before 5.8 my iPhoto were impossible but 5.8 allowed me access again. Maybe all will become clear with the release and installation of Snow Leopard. Presumably Apple are aware of this problem? Everything works fine on Tiger.

I feel sure that Apple is aware of it and I'm hoping that Snow Leopard will fix it - though nobody should have to pay for having existing apps fixed. Mine went long before the last security updates and update 5.8. Months in fact. I've also experienced problems with synchronisation but that is another entry.
