Canon camcorder won't transfer video

Hi everyone,

I have to admit that I'm not the most tech savvy person out there. I bought my first camcorder. It's a Canon Vixia HF 20. I filmed some video and wanted to transfer it to the iMac. I turned on the camcorder and attached the supplied USB cable from the camcorder to the iMac and activated iMovie, but nothing happened. I played with the import option under file but nothing happened as well.

Can anyone help?

Thank you

I have a panasonic video camera and when i connect mine imovie doesn't even recognize anything is connected. I hit the import button and it tells me to connect a camera. If I open it in iphoto and try to import it says its in the wrong format, which I don't know how to change. However it did import the still photos from the video camera into iphoto with no problems. I am very frustrated, thinking I will have to keep my pc connected just so I can use and organize my videos. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

So I just checked on the sony website and realized that its not compatible at all with apple! I went to download the drivers and its only supported by windows! So I think thats my problem...maybe its yours too. So I think Im going to use my boyfriends PC to upload my videos, transfer them onto a hard-drive then import it that way onto my mac.
wish me luck!

Your camcorder is fine with iMovie 09. My suggestions are two;
1)Canons sometimes take a little bit of effort to connect. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting your camcorder. Try shutting down iMovie and then turning it back on. I have a Canon hf100 usb camera also and love it. I just put up with the odd frustration of it sometimes not recognizing the connection.
2) Click on the camera icon in the main iMovie interface (middle, extreme left). See if your camera is "seen" my iMovie. If not, try disconnecting and reconnecting the camcorder.

Ooops, I should mention that, as far as I know one still needs an intel mac to use AVCHD, the form that the Camcorder records to. If the problem has to do more with the fact one has a powerpc, not an intel Mac, I suggest looking for VoltaicHD or the like. It costs but allows the use of your camera with iMovie, after conversion.

I had to reformat my SD card before iMovie would recognize my Canon HF100. One I did this I was able to recognize the MTS files through USB to the camera or through the SD card slot on the MacBook. The file formatting seems very sensitive. I just wish I could import the MTS files directly without the need for the exact file structure on the SD card. Anyone have luck importing MTS files directly?
