Mouse pointer jumping around the screen

My mouse pointer has just started jumping around the screen. It vibrates and slowly moves down the screen even if I am not touching it. I have cleaned the sensor but that has not helped. I unplugged it and the pointer still jumped around.

Any ideas what might be causing this as I have not seen quite this problem on other discussions.

HI,

That's interesting... restart your iMac. See if that makes a difference.

Also, do you have anything nearby that might cause interference, like a cell phone or graphics tablet?

May sound crazy, but dust and lint build up on a mouse pad can cause erratic cursor behavior.

You could try deleting this file.

com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your iMac.

Thanks, there were several things that might have resulted in interference, a mobile phone transmitter by the computer and transformer for a halogen light. I have moved those and moved the computer and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for your help, I had not thought of that possibility.

Hi, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the external mouse. Ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, this MacbookPro3,1 has had the same problem with trackpad. Sometimes it helps to restart but nowadays the pointer just keeps on juggling downwards the screen.

There are a few other threads about this. Hopefully there will be an fix for this soon?

I just bought a new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard installed. The mouse pointer does not track smoothly. It will lag and then jump, so I'll very often miss the intended spot. I've tried it with the optical Might Mouse and a Microsoft laser mouse 6000 (both wired). I've tried different materials for the mousing surface, but none improved the tracking. Neither of these mouse have issues when used with my MacBook Pro (running Leopard). I'm wondering if this is a Snow Leopard problem. Anyone any ideas?
