iphone wont connect to charger or computer..

my iphone wont stay with the charger or the computer cord.. when i plug it in it flashes sporadically and it recognizes its plugged in but does not stay plugged in.. also when i plug it into the computer, it does the same thing and iTunes tells me it either got "an invalid response from the device" or it gets error (0xE8000001). What i dont get is that the cord works when i plug my ipod into it.. and my iphone charges when it connects to my iHome.. what is going on?
