Accessing CDDB & iTunes store

Like Laura TT in a previous discussion, but after downloading the latest iTunes while I was in UK on leave, iTunes reports connection to the CDDB and iTunes server failed due to a time out. I have run diagnostics and tried deleting and resetting the rule in the Symantec personal firewall. This last resulted in me being unable to re-enter the rule.
The diganostics are as follows:

OK lets treat gracenote as a separate issue and leave it to one side for the moment. The Gracenote site ( http://www.cddb.com/ )is quite separate from Apple.

Do you have any other security software apart from Norton even if you are not using it? Have you ever had any other security software even if you uninstalled it.

Which Norton are you using? I am using 2009 which seems to allow iTunes upgrades through.

Did this problem start after an upgrade? If not did you change anything on your system just before the problem started, or has it never worked?

That profile is commonly due to firewall blocking. As a test can you try briefly disabling your Norton while trying to connect to the store. If Connection succeeds it will isolate the problem to Norton. This should not be too dangerous if you are using a router.

In order to make a new entry for iTunes in the program section of firewall configuration, you need to click on "Add". Then navigate to Program files\iTunes and choose iTunes.exe. Then chose Permit all. If it will not let you do this, are you logged in as an administrator? (Don't take any notice of the entry in the diagnostics that says you ar enot an administrator).

If that's not it, you need to think about other software such as web filtering, parental controls and Wb accelerators.

The only other security software is Windows Vista's own - and that firewall is off. The problem seemed to stem from the downloading of the latest iTunes at the end of July in UK, since when I have had no call to access the store until now on my return to Oman (hence the delay in discovering the problem). As I said, it used to work OK before that. Anyway I will try disabling Norton and report back. Thanks for the help.

Yes try briefly disabling Norton internet security completely.

The story you tell does sound very much as though it ought to be firewall blocking.

But could there be any issues with accessing the iTunes store from Oman? Do you have access to any other PCs with iTunes and can they connect OK, either from your location or else where? Have you ever been able to access the store from your current location.

Turning all of NIS off does not solve the problem. I have meantime looked at the activity log for the Norton firewall and the following items are what seems to happen every time iTunes tries to access the internet.
The present default action is to "block" communications.
Outbound TCP connection.
Remote address, service is (17.250.236.65,http(80)).

An instance of "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" is preparing to access the Internet.
I'm beginning to think perhaps Norton is at fault and I should maybe uninstall and reinstall it (if I can).

Did you manage to delete any entry for iTunes.exe in your list of programs in Norton and then make a new one with permit all? Deleting old entries is very important.
.

It certainly looks as though Norton is blocking access and it doesn't seem to like iTunes accessing port 80. Is there anything in the firewall configuration that controls access to particular ports?
.
I remember having trouble with iTunes accessing gracenote with Norton 2005 if I tried to use a proxy server. That seemed to be a port 80 problem and the only way of fixing it was to either not use a proxy server or turn off monitoring of both port 80 and 81.

Hi Polydorus, and thanks for your input. I had deleted the entry for iTunes in the Norton firewall, but was finding it impossible to re-enter it. Despite following the correct procedure, a new rule for iTunes would not appear in the list. However, on advice from the Norton user forum, I've downloaded NIS 2009 and everything seems to be working OK now - although I find that Oman is about the only country in the world from which I am not allowed to purchase from the iTunes store!! Once again, thanks very much for your help - problem solved.
