SPOD all the time...

I have a 17 inch 2Ghz white iMac with Mac OS 10.5.6. It had been working fine till I had to reinstall Leopard because it had responding all of a sudden à la Windows.
Since then, it has become so slow. I have to face the cursed SPOD all the time.
A simple task like opening an app, like Disk Utility, took me around 10-15 minutes because SPOD was appearing every time I clicked, scrolled, opened folders etc

I cant even use big apps like iPhoto or Garageband. Opening them takes hours and SPOD appears even if I hover over a photo. iTunes is soo irritating. It takes me around 20 seconds to even change a playing song.

I checked out Console to see the problem and I saw spindump was creating many log entries whenever the SPOD occurred. So i disabled it and it worked fine..... for about 5 minutes or so. Even after disabling spindump, I still get SPOD and it is downright annoying. I used to use my iMac for pretty much everything. Now I just use for transferring songs to my iPod.

Copying files even as large as 20 gb took me around 30 min- 1 hr. Now copying a 25 mb file takes around 6 min, a 2gb file around 6-9 hrs and 20gb... 40 hours.

Oh and may I add that there are twenty-something vertical lines on the screen , obscuring it?

WTH is this, Apple? My Windows 98 laptop can work faster than my iMac.

I'm open to any suggestions which will make my Mac work faster.

I forgot to add that I had partitioned my hardrive into two parts. When this SPOD problem occurred, I did a fresh install of Leopard onto the 2nd partition.
Nothing changed. Even it was am fresh install, it worked very slowly and guess what?.. SPOD.

Right now, I'm copying a 6mb file and the ETA says 2 hours. ***?

Well, the partition in which I've installed Mac OS X is 40 gb and around 10-12 gb is free. That's more than 10%.

I tried clearing my cache and revving up my fans, but it's only a bit better.

One thing I've noticed that whenever I copy any file, the CPU temperature soars up to 45-48 degrees. Even setting the fans at full speed doesn't make much difference.
