Ah, the Billster from Victoria, Canada has just joined the Dead Capsule Club. In the wee hours of this morning the green lamp of my 1TB of Jun 09 winked out. The unit is 2.5 years old.

I am using an Airport Express 11n I keep around so we have Internet again. Coverage is surprisingly good.

Judging by what I read here it overheated albeit it was in a cool cellar fully ventilated. What a royal nuisance this is. There are no critical data on the drive so no panic about that.

I take it that the newer units, 2 and 3 TB have the same design problem with the PSU, fan orientation and sensor, and no vents. Right?

What is the record for the Airport Extreme? Opinions gratefully accepted here, please. I'm looking for a good WiFi unit perhaps with the ports that the TC and Extreme have.

As for backup HDs, I'll switch to Lacie models with USB 3.0 ports.

    The Billster

    August in peace.
Dam consumerist Capitalism and it's built in lifespan fail times.

same thing for me, power light went and I'm off to the Appke store to see if my laptop Applecare will cover it.
Bit hacked off about this though.

January 2012....My TC left this world, and I am angry.

Apple is becoming a big deaf monstrous enterprise, far from what I believed it was for some years ago.

    Hello MaziarHE,

Welcome to the 'Dead TC Club', the club that no-one wanted to join.

To reduce your anger, never a good emotion long-term, try one of these merry repairers.  All are small, listening careful enterprises (most probably!) and probably more in-keeping with what you would expect of, and from, the Apple community?

Ray Haverfield (Lapastenague) put this together yonks ago (a 'yonk' is very long time) and those on it serve the Apple community in need, blah blah...

I went to the apple store and they replaced mine free of charge because I had Applecare on my laptop, bought it around the same time.
I think they are aware and will do their best to help if there's any way of putting it through an extended warranty plan.

My Applcare has well and truely paid for itself.

    August 2009 1TB RIP

I was really annoyed at apple about this but no-one in the store wanted to know. I made an appointment with a apple (patronising) genius who said they could replace the whole unit for £260, this would be an old 1TB unit, not a 2TB unit that is actually.. guess what… £260, they could not fix it "Hard drives do fail now and again" said the Genius… it turned out the HDD was fine, I put it in another box.

I called customer support on the phone they said they couldn't change it as the offer had expired it was out of there hands. I had to take out the HDD and throw away the whole (originally £329) unit in a bin bag! If this is apple's way of reducing its environmental impact I think they may need to have a re-think.

There was no way of fixing this power pack failure, they only replaced the units until August 2011, which makes me even more angry as It shows they know there is a problem but have given the problem a cut off date 5 MONTHS AGO!

Apple, you should be ashamed of yourself on this one… a known problem even you admit that can not be replaced.. I will NOT be replacing my apple Time Capsule or purchasing anything from apple i do not need anymore

Hi Jonty, I had the same problem, stick to your guns with apple, they came good for me  after I escalated the issue.  Are you the Jonty Rose who's part of Eat Drink etc?

  • JontiRose Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Hi Peter,

I have thrown it away now GRRRRR! but am writing them a letter (yeah a letter, check it out!) how did you escalate the issue?

I'm not sure what Eat Drink is, so probably not part of it.. I do eat and drink though.. why?

  • peter_webster Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Ah just wondered, unfortunately I posted my approach to getting my 1tb replaced with a new 2tb on this forum but apple took it down so I'm sure if I write my story they won't allow it on the forum again!

  • peter_webster Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I should try and set up a web page explaining my approach really which would be independant of the moderator on this forum, Its a shame, as you said they know its an issue as they previously have offered replacement models, Anyway, I can explain more about the Company Eat Drink if you email me, my address is my forum name at

Did you get my email peter?

Came home from work today and found out I apparently joined the Dead TC Club.  Yay.  Hope the annual dues aren't too expensive.  My TC almost reached it's 2nd birthday.  Such a tragedy.  Maybe the Patriots loss was too much for it to bear.  We'll never know.

  • CaptBill Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Chuckky...  Call Apple Customer Relations and explain. You will need the serial number of your TC. They are really quite helpful. It's worth spending the time to do this.

  • chuckky Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Last night I called tech support and gave them my best 'positive attitude'. The support rep told me there's nothing Apple can do since my TC is a 2nd generation. Doesn't fall under the replacement program that was offered to 1st gen. TC owners.

  • chuckky Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Stacy, I saw your post and then saw it recently removed.

Capt Bill, I called Apple again today with hopes of reaching a different rep.  Received the same resopnse as before.  Pried and pressured just a little and he talked to his supervisor....was transferred about 6 times during the call up the chain and was finally granted a free replacement.  The total call time was about 70 minutes and I managed to stay polite and humorous throughout the conversations.

    I'm a satisfied customer.

Kudos to Apple for replacing my TC.
