    I should have said that I used the power supply from a Cisco router, not the router itself.

    Add me to the list of "Just died" users. When I went to bed it was working fine. When I woke up? No green light up front. Actually, no light at all. Unplugged and replugged...nothing.

    It looks like a very shiny white brick.

    add me to the list. glad to see many have encountered the same problem. Upgraded to snow leopard and has worked fine now just randomly died.

    Yep - add me too.

    Spent three days talking to the peeps on Apple Care and the end result is:

    - They wouldn't offer me a new unit because I don't have Apple care on any of my three Macs at home

    - They wouldn't admit to there being any core issues with the unit; despite me mentioning the numerous threads and reports of an apparent system propensity for 18 month old power failure.

    - And even if they had have offered me a replacement they told me that I would have had to 'whistle' for the data on it (they have no retrieval service, despite these being backup and remote storage devices).

    SO... I have taken the hard-drive out and am now looking for a SATA 3.5" enclosure for it.

    I am very, very upset. And would love to get a new 1TB TC but have really lost faith in the product.

    Has anyone had any luck at all?

    In the UK there is extended warranty on design fault products.. this includes TC and several UK users have had theirs replaced outside of 1year apple warranty... but you ripped the rubber boot so now they will refuse to replace it...

    But you can still repair it yourself or have the capacitors in the power supply replaced at a tv/electronics repair shop.. it is a relatively easy job and shouldn't be that expensive... take the power supply to the shop and get them to follow the notes I have posted... I won't post it again... people will get bored with me posting them over and over but there are several references to my repair website.

    I'm a little worried about messing with power stuff so may take it to a 'pro'.

    I couldn't take the rubber foot off in a single go but then the agent on the phone told me that this was 'my only option for getting my data' back ;/

    Exactly the same here. Apple doesn't repair the TC, Apple replaces it. But I did want to keep my Time Machine Data. I've got an enclosure for the HD and an APExtreme. I lost the faith in the TC and in Apple's "heat engineering" too.

    It was an expensive experience: CHF 670 for the TC, CHF 229 for the APE and CHF 163 for the HD enclosure = CHF 1062 (about USD 1030).

    It's my understanding that Apple's only offer to make this "right" for loyal Apple customers such as myself, is to offer a replacement without any data recovery services for the dead TC. Now would someone explain to me why anyone in their right mind would want ANOTHER first-gen TC that will undoubtedly die 18 months from now???

    Come now Apple - we've come to expect better from you. Circumstances such as this are what brought you so many disgruntled MS customers...myself included.

    Have the same problem as all the earlier posts. Went out after 3:30 am this morning and now won't get power. Had it around 16-18 months. Semi-local apple store is closed til next week. Gotta get a new router now (wireless) if I want internet at home. From what I have read in here about apple store experiences, I will most likely be disappointed with their lack of appropriate action. I'll keep you all posted. Any thing I should, or shouldn't do/say to them?

    I am sad to announce that I joined this party this morning.

    R.I.P My 1st generation Time Capsule, born (delivered) March 5th 2008, died October 5th 2009

    I called Apple (I do not have any Apple Care) and appealed to Finnish Consumer protection law. They told me to go authorized Apple service center. Let's see how this proceeds.

    You use a heatgun or just a hair dryer on highest heat setting... once it is hot carefully lift the rubber. Keep heat on the section you are lifting. It will come off pretty neatly with most of the glue on the rubber, albeit burn your fingers. You need some leather work gloves or something. It will handle a fair bit of pressure hot but rubber, once it tears, it will go very suddenly. If you get it off in one piece you can open the TC and remove the hdd. Backup the files and then put it back and put the rubber back on... nobody the wiser...!!

    This is for benefit of others... the tip is in about 15 websites including my own. Any site that talks about upgrading the harddisk will tell you how to get the rubber boot off. You will find the glue is **** hard to get off now that the rubber is broken up.

    Mine died on me yesterday. I took it apart this morning, pulled the hard drive and connected it to my Mac Pro using a Newer Technology USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter. After several tries I was able to get it mounted on my desktop. I tried using Disk First-aid to no avail, all I got were errors. I opened and ran DiskWarrior 4.2 and got an entire page of directory errors, fixed them and Drive Genius2 to defrag it. I put it all back together and it's up and running

    Mine died today - purchased 4/29/08

    Will schedule an appointment at my Apple store in a few days. What is the best way to go about getting the data on the new drive. Sounds like Apple is not doing this? If anyone hears of lawsuit I would like to join if they don't replace my TC and get my data back on the new one. This was marketed as a professional grade hard drive (or something like that) and it's not working after a year and a half. I have cheap crap I bought at best buy last for 6 years. Can someone repost any places to get the power supply repaired. Sounds like that may be the better route?
