Having problems importing home movie DVD

I have created a dvd of my home movies and I can't get it to import into final cut so I can work with it. It keeps telling me I have an error. so I tried to turn it into a quick time movie and I cant get it to open there either. Is there something else I need to do firt to my DVD movie first

Handbrake is a nice tool, but the problem is that it will "rip" the DVD video to mpeg-4 format. You are already behind the eight-ball because the DVD video is already encoded (mpeg-2) and quality loss is inevitable. Further re-encoding to mpeg-4 will just degrade it further.

If the original material is not available and you must rip the video from a DVD, using one of the tools that rips directly to DV format is your best bet for minimizing quality drop.
