I would seem worth while to check the log to see what's happening.

My first backup after installation - 6.5 GB in 48 minutes.
Second backup 74 seconds for 9.5 Mb.

This to a Time Capsule over GB Ethernet.

I've done many test backups to both Time Capsule and FW drives over the last few months with 10.6 and have never had a stall/slowdown as many have described.

See if you can find any clues in the log.

My log looks perfectly normal, just slow (lines trimmed for legibility):

11:25:19 PM -- Starting standard backup
11:25:21 PM -- Ownership is disabled on the backup destination volume. Enabling.
11:25:39 PM -- Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: mtree
11:25:39 PM -- Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
(52 min. later)
12:17:08 AM -- Starting pre-backup thinning: 9.23 GB requested (including padding), 1.46 GB available
(35 min. later)
12:52:50 AM -- Pre-backup thinning completed successfully: 10 backups were deleted
12:52:51 AM -- Copied 0 bytes of 7.7 GB, 0 of 105971 items
1:53:06 AM -- Copied 374.3 MB of 7.7 GB, 122 of 105971 items
2:53:07 AM -- Copied 1.1 GB of 7.7 GB, 2141 of 105971 items
3:53:08 AM -- Copied 1.7 GB of 7.7 GB, 9630 of 105971 items
4:42:58 AM -- Error (256): getting properties for /Volumes/xxx/Backups.backupdb/yyy/2009-08-28-220155/mtree/System/Library/CoreSe rvices/Jar Launcher.app/Contents/Resources/Default.nib/keyedobjects.nib
4:53:08 AM -- Copied 1.9 GB of 7.7 GB, 10707 of 105971 items
5:53:09 AM -- Copied 2.7 GB of 7.7 GB, 21030 of 105971 items
6:53:09 AM -- Copied 3.0 GB of 7.7 GB, 53817 of 105971 items
7:00:48 AM -- Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
7:46:08 AM -- Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
7:53:10 AM -- Copied 3.3 GB of 7.7 GB, 91564 of 105971 items
8:15:48 AM -- Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

My guess is that the Event store UUIDs message and the need for deep traversal are normal for a first Time Machine backup after upgrading to Snow Leopard. The thinning took quite some time, but that is consistent with what I've seen in the past: Thinning is slow.

The actual copying is what is really slow - as you can see from the hourly messages of progress. I've never seen it be this slow on this drive before. I note that it was slow even before the few error messages that happened after the copying, and none of them look all that suspicious.

Anyone have any ideas?

Correct.

See item #D2 of the Troubleshooting *User Tip.* The first two items there are the most common causes of slow TM backups, especially with the Spotlight messages you're getting.

Hmmm, except that prior to the first of those messages, it took 6 hours to back up 3GB. That is very very slow.

Regarding the ideas in #D2:
1. I have no anti-virus scanning software
2. The volume has been excluded from Spotlight for months
3-6. N/A (volume is directly connected)
7. Haven't done a +Repair Disk+ recently
8. I did deselect +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep+, though one can hear the hard disk writing full time, it never stops. The activity light on the front also is always active and never displays sleep mode.
9. It is directly connected to the Mac with an Apple FireWire cable (found them to be the most reliable cables)
10. N/A (only one FireWire 400 port on my MacBook Pro)
11. Drive has no disable sleep mode, but see above - it hasn't gone into sleep mode anytime in the last 10 hours.

So, of the #D2 issues, only Repair Disk seems a possible culprit. But I'm disinclined to try that while it is in the middle of a backup!

Ah well... I suppose it is wait and see time. As long as the subsequent backups are speedy, I suppose I can live with the first one being a 20 hour process... but sheesh!

I had the same issue with the first backup after upgrading to SL. Over ethernet to a Time Capsule took over 5 hours but it did finish. Looked at first like it was going to take forever. I even stopped it a couple of times to be sure. Subsequent incremental have been really fast. Much improved over previous version. Now I am doing my first restore and it is taking a very long time. First to find the file and now to restore. Something is not quite right. Another failure of by Apple to fully test before rushing SL to market.

If you're still getting the +Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.+ messages, either the exclusion isn't working or you do need to do a +*Repair Disk.+* Try removing the exclusion for a few moments, then excluding it again.

No, I wouldn't, either.

It's also possible your drive is having a problem. How old is it? You might want to check with the maker for firmware updates, etc. WD released some fairly recently that have solved some similar problems.

We have the same problem - 2 Mac pros, the backup just slowed to a craw and stopped.
This is over FIREWIRE 800 ! - which was blazing fast before the upgrade.

I actually went so far as to partition and ERASE one Timecapsule drive altogether; no change. There is something very wrong.
I deleted the prefs for it, setup a brandNEW backup to it - so as to not have any legacy, index or other issues, and I am at 48GB (of 768) - after 8 hours!

This is a quite new 1.5TB drive from WD; again, worked perfectly in 10.5.8.....

Time Capsule? That's either via WIFI or Ethernet, not FireWire 800. Please clarify.

Have you done the things in #D2 of the Troubleshooting User Tip? If not, that's the place to start. If that doesn't help, copy and post the TM Buddy messages here.

Aug 29, 2009 12:49 PM in response to Pondini

Sorry, time MACHINE. We have a time capsule, but in this case, we have 2 (1 each) 1.5 TB Firewire 800 drives connected to the MP, using Time Machine).

Anyway - thank you for your help.
We have gotten one to work now - by again re-partitining the drive and going one step further - renaming it completely. It us going well now for the initial backup. Of course we lost history info (which was fine as we had a separate backup, and still do).
The other system still is slow. There seems to be some legacy issue with traversing the existing backup.
I will post the log later on. Thanks again.

Dan
