5th Mouse Button and Expose and Spaces

I've just installed the 10.6 upgrade and everything is wonderful except one thing, my 5th mouse button is assignable, but not recognized for spaces/expose. I can use my 5th mouse button in the finder and it acts as a left-click, so I know the OS is recognizing the input itself. But, when I assign the 5th mouse button to any of the expose or spaces it fails to activate said action. I prefer to use my 5th mouse button to activate spaces, I've assigned it that, clicked it, but nothing. Anybody else having trouble with this?

BTW, I am using a Microsoft Trackball Explorer.

Since Apple doesn't fix this bug in 10.6.2, I decided to write a tiny shell script to fix the problem. It's available here:

http://snipt.org/pXn

code:

#! /bin/sh
#You should chmod u+rwx fixExp.sh before using this script.

echo This Script will delete the file "com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist" and >logout your user. Do not forget to set up your Expose Preferences.

sleep 10

cd /users/username/Library/Preferences
#replace username with your username

rm com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to log out'

or download it

I have found the solution after months of looking in the Mac OS 10.6 (now 10.6.2)
1) Just go to "Preferences"
2) Then "Exposé & Spaces"
3) In the section "Exposé" you'll be able to assign your extra mouse buttons to "All Windows", "Application Windows" and "Show Desktop".
Also if you want to check your scroll button for "Dashboard", the option is here.

No scripts, problem solved within the 10.6 options. They just moved this options from the Mouse section, to here.

To Clarify some points on this issue:

1) This has nothing to do with the 5th mouse button. It just happens that many people use the 5th button to activate the "show desktop" action. The issue happens with ANY button assigned to "show desktop".

2) This is not specific to Logitech mice or people using the Logitech Control Center. For people using LCC, moving the Expose app out of the utilities folder and into the application folder may be a useful workaround, but again, this is only relevant for logitech users using the LCC.

3) Deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file may in some cases temporarily solve the problem until a reboot. However, I don't think this is really an issue with this preference file. I saved this file while the machine was in a working state, and also while it was not working and compared the plist files and they are identical.

4) Logging out, and logging back in either as a different user, or as the same user, sometimes solves the problem. For me this is inconsistent.

5) The problem appears even when I create a fresh user. However often logging in and out or switching users temporally solves the problem. However the problem is always there on a cold boot.

6) The only workarounds currently seem to be to use 3rd party software / mouse drivers which allow you to assign these fucntions, or to assign the mouse button to a keyboard keystroke, and assign THAT to the show desktop action.
