Rearranging Icons on the Desktop

Hello everyone. I had this problem before 10.6, but it's only been occurring the past few days. I have my icons arranged a certain way, and whenever I restart, shutdown, or simply logout/login, my icons are completely rearranged. I have my dock on the right-hand side of my screen, and the icons (with the exception of the Macintosh HD icon) get pushed to the far right. Some pictures of the before and after are linked below.

Before: http://www.bartleyrichardson.com/public_img/icon-before.jpg
After: http://www.bartleyrichardson.com/public_img/icon-after.jpg

I have tried the following:
- Deleted the desktop.plist file from /Users/<me>/Library/Preferences/
- Attempted to change the size (both icons and grid)
- Tried to move the icons to another place on the desktop far away from the dock
- Made the dock occupy the full vertical space on the right-hand side
- Made the dock as small as possible

None of the above options made any difference. The one thing that did work was to move the dock back down to the bottom of the screen. Then my icons stayed in their proper arrangement.

I've also tried all of the combinations under "View Options" for my icons. This includes arranging by name, last modified, aligning to grid, and no arrangement at all. None of these seem to make any difference. As you can probably tell by the pictures, my icons seem to be arranged in alpha/numeric order upon restart/login (no matter what I've told Finder to do).

This started happening after the last 10.5 update (10.5.8). It persists under 10.6. I'd be extremely grateful for any help!

In my case, deleting com.apple.windowserver.plist from Library/Preferences and restarting does NOT fix the problem at all.

Besides, the com.apple.windowserver.plist at Library/Preferences is not created again. Is such com.apple.windowserver.plist from Library/Preferences needed for anything?

Thanks.

I tried most of the proposed solutions in this topic, including the plist deletions, etc. Only one worked: deleting the desktop .DS_Store file with Onyx. That worked like a charm (so far).

For me, the desktop items would revert to default alphabetical order on every reboot/login.

This just started a few days ago and it drove me nuts!

In my case, I know what initiated the corruption of the desktop file, if not exactly how.

I accidentally deleted my Little Snitch app and when I went back in Time Machine to restore it and its support files, that's when the desktop issue started. It also messed with my network preferences to the point that I could no longer connect to my wife's computer, our wi-fi network, or the internet.

Deleting all of the Little Snitch files resolved all issues except the desktop rearranging. That was easily done with Onyx, and now I'm a happy camper, thanks to Steff X!

If you think this may be the cause of your problem, the file locations are here:

~/Library/Logs/Little Snitch Installer.log
~/Library/Logs/Little Snitch Network Monitor.log
~/Library/Logs/Little Snitch UIAgent.log

/Library/Little Snitch/Little Snitch UIAgent.app/

I hope this is helpful to someone.

The problem still persist in 10.6.4. About once every month for me.

I noticed that it seems to happen when you get a finder popup, when for example uploading a file in safari, from the Desktop. This, only when you change the view (column, list, cover flow), in this finder popup, then you get the problem the next time you startup the Mac.
Still not 100% sure about the cause.

Just hope 10.6.5 will solve the problem...
