I have not been able to burn dvd's in either of my drives for over a month now. I can't do it in Toast or Disk Utility. I've tried cleaning the lenses and the "international fix," nothing works. I've come to the conclusion it's something in the most recent software that has changed something. Is there some way to install 10.4 on one of my external hard drives so I can boot up from that and try it? I downloaded 10.4.4 and 10.4.7 server update, but neither will let me install them. These drives aren't that old and since both stopped at the same time, it can't just be the drives.

Same problem here on an almost 2-years-old MacBook Pro 3,1 - DVD burning worked fine with 10.5.8, but now with 10.6.1 I can only read DVDs, not write them (I tried a 4.7 GB DVD +R and a 4.7 GB DVD -R).
Then I suggest you contact Roxio about the problem, because mine works now that I upgraded to the latest version of 9, so it's obviously something that Roxio needs to fix in version 10.
I had the same problem. Went to the Genius Bar and he deleted all iDVD files from both libraries, reinstalled and updated. It did burn one DVD there. So I bought the media he used (Memorex instead of the Sony I used to be able to use) got home and no-go again.
There was the tell-tale sign that something was amiss when opening iDVD and the background images for the theme didn't show up. Closed, opened again and all seemed fine, and then the disc ejects with "6 mins left" and stalls completely with "less than one minute remaining."
I only used a small vid in mov format at the store though. Will try that again, and hope for the best, but may be removing Snow Leopard until there's a fix if I can't burn DVDs with it. (Disk Utiliy burns haven't worked either for me.)
I have a new MBP/17 with Snow. I wanted to put some files on disc. As usual (on my old MBP), I highlighted the files, CTRL-click, and select "Burn X files to disc". It requests a blank disc. I insert a blank CD or DVD (depending on size). It spins a bit then kicks it out. I see no error messages on the screen or in the console.
I am in a unique position for testing, I have the 2007 MBP/17 and the 2009 MBP/17 with both running Snow. The 2007 reads/writes CDs/DVDs with no issue. The 2009 has problems with some DVDs (no all).
Completely off topic: the 2007 connects to my home network without issues. The 2009 will have an issue every few days (and require multi reboots until it picks it up).
Disk Utility has been helpfully creating coasters rather than burned discs for me since the upgrade. I did actually get one correctly burned disc, but I guess that was an anomaly.
This has coincided with the installation of Snow Leopard for me, so my instinct is to attribute it to that.
I'd prefer to have the program function correctly rather than download/purchase alternate software to provide the same functionality that my "upgrade" to SL has eliminated, so I hope this is resolved soon.
I am the one with a old and new MBP/17. Both running Snow. The old MBP would burn DVDs, and the new one would not. It turns out that the new MBP did not like the DVD brand that the old one could use.
Hi there.
Same problem here, I can't burn no dvd since Snow Leopard. I've tried different disc brands and different softwares, even disc utility, nothing works, I get an error before burning even begins…
I Hope this will be solved soon! I'm (we're) kinda stuck here!
It's gotta be a SL bug. All of my media has given me errors that previously did not. I did successfully burn ONE dvd by setting the write speed to 1x, but even then I get a few errors before I get a successful burn.
It might be a bug in SL, but I was having the problem before that. I was hoping SL would solve it. The only thing that worked for me was taking the drive completely apart and cleaning it.
