Today I downloaded all the update software for printers and Mac SN and everything now works fine. I hope that it works for all that have had these problems.

    that's is for KenV54

I own one of the forgotten 1220C, and had set my hopes in 10.6.1, but no!!!
Search on google led me into this discussion
and i found your post regarding the foomatic - drivers on http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs

    I did install them (Ghostscript, Foomatic-Driver, Hpijs-Driver)
    and
    it IS a great solution.

Thanks a loot for your posting.

In Xart, you are very welcome.

Foomatic has been a life-saver for me, too, with my old HP printers, both the Laserjet 1000 (a great, efficient, printer) and the inkjet color 5550, for which there is a Gutenprint driver but the Foomatic works much better.

Why HP has abandoned Mac users is beyond me. They've done the same thing with some scanners, like the 5470c. You have to send for a free (except for shipping) CD Rom with their Mac Scanjet copy utility to use this scanner. It does work, but you can't use the new Preview to scan directly into it.

The 1220c is a great printer, please support it if you can

Still have not seen a reply for this. I too have a Scanjet 4670 that went DOA upon installing 10.6. Doing the 10.6.1 update did nothing either.

My 6MP does not work even when connected directly using a parallel to USB adapter.

My 4500N I got to work doing the IP address thing.

So I already have to buy a replacement for the 6MP, do I also have to replace my 4670 scanner?

Was planning on buying my wife a new iMac, but given this situation I may just wait or get something else.

Very disappointed all in all. Macs were famous for "just working". Now they rival Windows for being a PITA to install and get you stuff working.

A $29 "upgrade" now will cost me hundreds of dollars to buy a new printer and maybe a new scanner as well. Thanks Apple.

"My 6MP does not work even when connected directly using a parallel to USB adapter."

    wmalvey,

I don't know about the HP Scanner, but for the HP 6MP printer have you tried setting up the Foomatic drivers? There is a post above, 3 or 4 posts back, giving the website and method of installation. They have worked well with my HP LJ 1000 and DJ 5550, both old and very different printers, when the Gutenprint drivers didn't.

    hi
can others who have upgraded to 10.6.1 let us know if hp 1280 is able to be printed to or not?
    thanks

"can others who have upgraded to 10.6.1 let us know if hp 1280 is able to be printed to or not?"

The HP Deskjet 1280 has Foomatic drivers available--see previous posts in this thread for the links. They do work. If it's some other 1280, I don't know.

In the interest of saving time and effort, this link gives the entire list of printers supported by the Foomatic drivers in Snow Leopard. It also lets you DL the set of three files necessary to use these drivers.

    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs#Printers

Despite the seeming complexity here, with three setup files required, etc., it is actually very simple, and the important thing is that these drivers work. The Foomatic drivers will all appear in the list of "other drivers" in printer setup once you go through the setup.

There could be some printing functions missing from some of them, as compared to the manufacturers' drivers that used to work in Tiger and Leopard, but they are pretty good, overall, in my experience.

Hi; I am grateful that I now have access to direct (USB) printing for the HP CLJ 3600 at work!

Now I need a solution for my old G85 MFP at home...somehow, my P1006 works (forgot how and amazed that THAT happened, given what everyone else has said about it)...that's on my left; but I really would like the G85 to work.

    Any ideas?

    thx

Re the HP LaserJet 6MP: USB to parallel adapters are notorious for being very finicky and not working in many cases. My HP Laserjet 5MP, which is the immediately preceding model and functionally similar to the HP LaserJet 6MP, works automatically without a hitch with the Snow Leopard upgrade because I have it set up with an HP JetDirect 300X print server (very inexpensive via eBay), which essentially turns the printer into an ethernet device. This will work fine with the 6MP. I'll be using my 5MP as my main workhorse printer until it dies because it is such an economical reliable printer (15 years old and counting!)
