Snow Leopard take the PRINTER UTILITY - Epson R280 photo printer

For the most part, my install on the new mini went well. I got back 17GB of HD. Whoa! Took about 45 minutes.

It took my Logitech controls and my Epson printer utility. I can still print on my Epson R280, but I no longer have a print utility used to check ink levels and clean the heads. Anyone else experience that?

Dear Ken,
I have the Epson SP R800 and I cannot utilize the printer utility nor the lite version mention in other posts. I also tried printing directly from iPhoto and it is taking a very long time (20 minutes) for a small 3X5 photo!! The only way that I can check levels is to look at the printer or press the ink indicator. Not happy with the gutenprint. Epson needs to fix this right away! The lite version states that the printer is not registered? The Epson printer utility shows no printer in the "printer list! What did you do to get yours to show up?

Click on the Utility tab and then on the Open Printer Utility button. That will take you to the Epson Printer Utility 3 (at least that's the title for my R280. The supply levels tab does squat as you've found out.

There *+is no+* Open Printer Utility button, that's kind of the point of the thread.

Did you go thru the System/Print&Fax preference pane? I should have specified that route. Select the Epson printer in the left hand pane a click on the Open Print Queue button. Then in the next window click on Printer Setup button. The window that drops down has the Utility tab at the far right.

If you go that route and don't get the tab then download the Epson Printer Driver v3.68 from here, remove the current driver, install the new one and try again.

It's compatible with 10.6.

It's the +same drop-down sheet+ in Printer & Fax Systems Prefs as it is in the print queue status app -- the Supply Levels tab says information not available and the Utility tab has only the two buttons.

I don't know about the R280, but for my printer there are no downloads dated later than 2008. Both the status app and the utility app are 64-bit Intel with July 09 Creation dates, so there's no way I'm installing anything from the Epson site over my SL install. I have an alias to the Utility app in a stack in my Dock, so I can get to it when I need to.

exploz,

Gutenprint loses almost all of the functions that came with my Epson SP R800. Plus the overall quality of the photos were dramatically poor. Even regular printing was bad. After reading a lot of posts with other users who had the same problem. I checked the Epson web site and quite naturally my printer has been discontinued so I felt stuck. Downloaded the newest drivers for 10.6 and such but the quality and functions were minimal at best. So I went to the Gutenprint web site and downloaded the uninstaller. VIola. Removal of Gutenprint and using the Epson drivers seems for now to have done the trick. You still have to go the print preference, select your printer and then chose options/supplies if you want to see ink levels or clean the heads automatically. Hope that his works for you!

Whoa, good move there RAP. Although I had things working with Gutenprint (thanks to the help I received here), I did what you did and downloaded the Gutenprint "uninstaller". I now have my original Espon Printer Utility back, although the "lite" version that came with Gutenprint still works. I guess the uninstaller doesn't take the utility, so now I have two, which is OK. Thanks for that great tip!
One thing I did notice with the Gutenprint software was that my Epson R280 printed a lot quieter. I do lot's of hi-res prints and the quality still looked pretty good with the Gutenprint but it's amazing how different software can virtually change the sound of your printer.

Thom and anyone else who may be able to help.
Quick question about the Epson Printer Utility Lite
I had the same problem and can't check ink levels or clean print heads. Tried the above app fix and when I open the Epson Printer Utility Lite it says "The printer is not registered" so I have to click ok and then it quits. Very frustrating as I can't print because the print heads are cloged and I can't get to anywhere to clean them
I have the epson r200 and otherwise it will print find just no utilities
Anyone have any ideas???

I have the Epson R280 and I found he Epson Printer Utility Lite, but it also says "The Printer is not registered" and closes as soon as you click OK, so I have no utilities at all. This is incredibly annoying.

Ahh, uninstalled Gutenprint, and yes I can once again print and use the Epson Print Utility Lite, which has the nozzle check, and head cleaning and Ink Levels. Nice.

I'm having a similar problem with my Epson Stylus Photo 900 attached to a MacBook Pro I just upgraded to SL. Using the Gutenprint driver I can print but have no real color management (where are my paper profiles?) and I can't check levels via Utility directly (crashes) or using Lite (printer not registered). I uninstalled the Gutenprint driver and returned to my SP900 driver and now I have no access to print controls - they have lines drawn through them in the dialogue box.

I print out of Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.4, and prior to SL upgrade had the control over this old printer that I needed to print. Now I have no control. Is there a fairly simple fix to this enabling the full print control I had before and access to Utilities, or should I just buy a new printer and send the bill to Apple?
